two points:

1. some shops in this area (CS&G to name one) offer a "performance guarantee" that allows you to buy a ski, try it for several days, and exchange it if you don't like it. pick a good ski and buy it from a store with a guarantee...chances are you'll like it immediately or learn to like it in a few days. if not, bring it back.

2. while most all-mountain skis are somewhat similar, there are "specialty" skis that are dramatically different. for example, i have a mogul ski that just plain rocks in the bumps...i would never trade it for an all-mountain ski.
