Kicking Horse is an awesome ski area.
First off, I've been there the last two seasons in a row, each for a week. Two years ago, they were having a great year, lost of beautiful snow, really dry and light. This past season wasn't such a great winter at least when I was there in February, but since there's so much terrain a KH, there was no problem finding lots of great skiing.
The area itself is pretty gnarly, with lots of chutes and steeps inbounds, directly off the gondola. The gondola ride is about 12 minutes if I remember correctly. When you get off at the top you have basically four options. At skier's left there's a bit of a cat track that takes you along a ridge and down into a bowl/valley that is the "easy" way down. If you stick to skier's left but go along the gondola line, you can traverse along the other ridge that runs under the gondola and drop into the numerous chutes that drop to skier's left. On the same ridge but dropping into skier's right of the gondola line, you have a tree filled area that has varying steepness. Finally if you choose, skier's right off the gondola takes you into another "valley" that will allow you to access a bit of a big wide open bowl. It's hard to describe, but what it all comes down to is a lot of terrain, most of which is at the advanced intermediate to expert level.
I think KH is a must see, if you're in the area of the BC interior. Also it's location is awesome, just about 3 hours from Calgary, and 3 hours from Fernie! It's a great experience too, mostly because of the extremely small crowds. It's not fully developed yet, so it's still a bit of a hidden gem.
This is the gondola line showing some of the terrain to skier's right of the ridge..[ November 20, 2003, 12:35 PM: Message edited by: Powderhoundin ]
