Whitewater - o/b

I've heard that the o/b skiing at WW is great. Any tips on where or how to find out about these areas? Are there any guided tours of the o/b areas offered? Or should I just shadow a local?

to bad the border wait is so long or id meet ya there and have a ball. BC at WW is everything and more. anywhere off the summit chair hits the access road. I heard rummblinns about a bus every 15 minutes to shuttle back. Ymir bowl and the area south of the resort is also very good. Beware of Extreme AVY danger. I witnessed a class 4 come out of Ymir that took out 15 hectares of timber and scatterd it all on one of the RUNS. then 20 minutes later one came down the chute above the lodge and stopped 150 feet from the lodge. I think the fatality rate of BC skiers at WW is very high. But hey, have a good time. Also on the WW website is a "future expansion map" this will show most of the terrain. BE AWARE , BE PREPARED

Thanks for the tip on the map. I can see the areas you are talking about, looks great. If a person had 2 cars, they could park one at on the road and the other by the lodge. That way if you venture into the BC behind summit, it looks like you can ski down to the car on the road and not have to hike back. I've eyeballed the terrain on the road up, and there looks like a huge amount of very inviting BC.

I hear ya about the avy dangers. WW gets a ton of snow. Even last year which was a lean year the snowpack was right up there. That's why I was wondering if there were guides or guided tours available.

Have you skied the BC terrain off Summit chair? How is it? We've skied right up to the boundary down Dynamite and Dynamite Roll peering over the orange fence at the wide expanse of untracked. :

Catchbasin is pretty sweet too though its a bit of a hike to get there. We were getting fresh tracks there days after the last snowfall.

Tip #1 -- Stay at the Dancing Bear Hostel in Nelson. Hang out in the dining room until you hear someone with an Austrailian accent. Ask him if he will let you shadow him the next day.

Tip #2 -- Get to the Summit chair a half hour before it starts. Ask someone with a pack if he (she?) will let you shadow them for a run. If he is a jerk, ask the next guy. Make sure he is not a yank.
