How good is Sugar Bowl?? How long will it take me to get there from South Tahoe?? I would like to stay in South Tahoe and hit Heavenly and Kirkwood. I would also like to hit Squaw and Sugar Bowl. 6-7 nights and then back home to Maine. Is South Tahoe a good base to hit these 4 resorts?? Thanks. You people are the best!!
Sugar Bowl is a great little area. The terrain is varied, the backcountry access is ideal, the snowfall is the highest in the area (tied with Kirkwood), the atmosphere is friendly and laid back, and the crowds are never large. I'm pretty sure it's my current favorite in the Tahoe area.
But I would not make a day trip from South Tahoe to Sugar Bowl. Suggest you drive up in the evening to Truckee, stay in the Truckee Hotel
(but not room 407, that's mine ), catch the free Sugar Bowl shuttle that stops in front of the hotel. If you really want to hit Squaw (not sure why), you can drive there from Truckee the next morning. Personally, I would drive right past Squallywood and go to Alpine Meadows. But if you've never seen Squaw before, you owe it to yourself to find out why it sucks so badly.
