Vail is excellent for kids. The childrens SS at Lionshead, Vail Village & Golden Peak have excellent instructors and a full kids program. On the mountain there are many kids adventure ski zones and a separate trail map so you can find them all. There is Adventure ridge at the top of the Gondola which has tubing, Laser tag, ice skating, snow bikes, sleds (your kids are too little for the bikes and sleds though) and a mini skidoo track. The Red Lion welcomes kids and Campo de Fiori (italian) & Dos Amigos (Mex) are excellent kid friendly resturants. Minturn Country Club is a relaxed cook your own kid friendly place and if you look real hard on the slopes on your left as you drive into Minturn you may spot some Elk. The Vail library has a big kids section and also loans DVDs and a huge video selection. Another good un is the Nova guides skido tours out of Camp Hale and across to Vail pass. They pick up and return you to your hotel inclusive. The route is not too challenging, the scenery spectacular and the trip educational. The kids ride on the back or front of your skido and love the trip. (better than disneyland) The Avon rec centre has a nice indoor swimming setup. Have fun.
