ski gear women vs unisex

Thread Starter
Hi,
I am intermediate +, will ski blacks but freak out a bit on the ice. About 135lbs and 5'5" Looking to buy new skis this week. I am currently using 4 yr old Fischer ICE 158. Wondered if anyone has comments on volkl carver motion vs carver motion 20 20 (for women).
Thanks

I'm not sure about Volkl as I haven't spoken to a Volkl rep yet, maybe someone here can shed light on that.

My wife and I spoke extensively with the Atomic rep yesterday about their women's vs men's skis. They are identical in flex, the only difference is color and bindings. The womens might be in silver color, the mens in blue or copper. The bindings would be be the 3.11 for women (din range 3-11) the mens would be the 4.12 (din range 4-12). My wife's din setting falls in the center of either binding so she could effectively ski either model. The womens however are $50 cheaper because of the "smaller" bindings.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that most manufacturers work this way, although some may actually have womens specific models. Again, there are enough reps on this board that may be able to tell you/me otherwise.

The Volkl 20/20 is 20% softer and 20% lighter than the similar Volkl unisex models. In that sense, they're not really Women's specific, they're more lighter/smaller person specific. I have a friend who skis on them and enjoys them because they're so easy to ski. Judging by your description I'd say you should try them out.

Kim: There was a number of replies to a similar question a couple of months ago. Keep paging back in this forum and you'll find all the opinions you would ever want.

My opinion is that this is marketing first, marketing second and marketing third. Oh, did I mention I believe this is plain old marketing?
