A question, a pleasant one, i had to deal with a number of times. Here's my take:
* The drive to Steamboat Springs is a long one. But it's out of the way, so crowds are relativly small even on the weekends
* Vail is big, but not big enough not to be a zoo
* Winter Park is nice if you like the bumps. The Circe if you don't mind a hike
* A-Basin. My personal favorite of what i've seen in the area, the altitude has been issue for me though, i live on sea level. Comes somewhat close to Alta. No resort, so tourist factor low compared to the resort places.
What strikes me for the future: Maybe i'm giving Loveland pass a try, or maybe cat skiing at Berthould pass. Unffortunatly no imminent plans, though.
Other possible strategy: Hop in the car early morning, and listen to the radio, they have a rundown on overnight accumulation. Head whereever they have the most fresh.
In all cases be prepared for some heavy I-70 traffic.
