Ski (all of) Utah! A 7 day ski safari to 14 resorts

In January 2017, three everyday guys from Salt Lake City set out on an adventure to conquer all 14 resorts of Utah in 7 days.  This is their story.  Check out our adventure...

Disclaimer: We are not professional skiers or snowboarders. So DO try (most of) this at home.

Meet Jared "JJ" Jones, Matthew D. LaPlante, and Erik "Swede" Price - all avid boarders and/or skiers.  One of our group is old school and likes to telemark, we'll let you figure out which one...

A former high school ski racer, Jared Jones spends most of his mountain time on a board these days, but he can still hang on parallel planks. He’s also got a degree in film from the University of Utah (which totally makes sense for someone who flies attack helicopters for the Utah National Guard, right?).  Check out his work at youtube.com/user/AH64Aviator or his newest channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcB0juJG8DVdD7lhuEqnNBg

Matthew D. LaPlante is an assistant professor of journalism at Utah State University (go Aggies!).  His reporting work from around the world is available at mdlaplante.com.  You can follow the Ski (all of) Utah trip on Twitter, @SkiAllOfUtah
Side Note: this project was his idea… Jared told him this was probably the best idea he’s ever had.

Another life-time skier, Erik Price also flies for the Utah National Guard and like Jared has multiple Afghanistan tours under his belt (Hindu Kush skiing or bust!).  Erik and his twin brother Sean have their own aerial photo/video company, Wrk2Play.  Check out their work at: www.wrk2play.com

Hey @New2PDX , this reminds me of your thread when you were checking out Utah skiing.

Here's the video mentioned in Post #1 embedded

Yep! @SkiAllOfUtah is a lot less wordy than me, though :) Cool video!

I managed to hit 12 of the 14 over two seasons, and I didn't find an area I disliked!

Nice!  Which 2 do you have left to ski or board?

I never made it up to the two Northern Utah spots. And now I live far enough away that I'm not sure I ever will. But looks like you enjoyed both in the video! No one here has posted a Cherry Peak report... what did you think? Can it survive?

Cherry Peak is a very small resort, but did have plans to add another lift.  It is a great spot for beginners (easy to moderate terrain), very affordable, and definitely family friendly.  It had a very nice base lodge and a fun tubing area to one side.  Hopefully there are enough people in the area that continue to provide business for the resort.  If I lived in that area I would definitely take my kids there.

As for the other resort, I assume you're talking about Beaver Mountain?  Awesome spot, I'd been there before.  Has a Mom & Pop vibe - low key but with some awesome terrain.  I certainly plan to go there again next year.  On a good powder day that place is off the hook!

If it helps, we created a YouTube Channel: Ski (all of) Utah, it features a 2 minute video for each resort!

P.S. As of writing this, I've posted 13 of the 14 resorts.  Just need to finish uploading the video for Brian Head.  We got so much snow that week, and I took a lot of video, so it's taken a while to sift through all the footage.  Such an awesome trip!

Nice!  Always interested in learning about the less well known places that cater to local families.  The vibe is always more relaxed.  Alta is my favorite but I just spent a couple days at Powder Mountain and definitely want to go back.

Could you list the ski areas in order?  Things go by so fast in the video it's hard to tell how you traveled to all 14 places in so few days.

Happy to share our itinerary!  We visited the resorts in this order...

Day 1: Park City & Deer Valley - we stayed the night in Logan, UT.

Day 2: Beaver Mountain & Cherry Creek - we stayed the night in Brigham, UT.

Day 3: Snowbasin & Nordic Valley - we stayed the night in Ogden, UT.

Day 4: Powder Mountain, Solitude, & Brighton (mostly night skiing) - we stayed the night in Salt Lake City, UT.

Day 5: Alta & Snowbird - we stayed the night in Salt Lake City, UT.

Day 6: Sundance Resort - we elected to only hit one resort this day because it's a 3 hour drive down to the southern resorts of Utah.  We flew down in a Cessna 172, but that was just for the fun of it.  We stayed the night in Cedar City.

Day 7: Eagle Point & Brian Head.

As you can see, this was as much a Road Trip as it was a Ski/Snowboard Trip.  Luckily we were among good friends, spirits were high, and we drank plenty of Red Bull!

A fun memento I put together after our trip.  I need to convince the wife to let me hang this in the house somewhere!
