Jackson Hole Roadtrip Jan./Feb. 2017 [driving from MN]

Hi All,

I'm planning a trip to JH and maybe a day at GT the first week of February 2017. Just have a couple general questions about driving out there from MN. Do you have to be worried about road closures often (once you get off the freeway)? After I-90, I'm looking at driving US-18 to I-25 to US-26 roughly OR I could go I-90 further west to US-16 to US-20 south to US-26.

Also, you can take the local bus to Teton Village it looks like? (Staying in Jackson.)

Any other general JH tips or info once at the mountain is appreciated.

Thanks!

When I visited Jackson, I took the bus from the town to Teton Village. It works really well, and saves you from having to worry about parking. It also allows you to have a pint or two after your day without worrying about the drive.

As for the bus from Jackson, while you can take the bus all the way from town, since you have a car then might be better to park at the large free lot at the turn to Teton Village and take the shuttle bus from there.  If you have enough people (4?), used to be able to park for free at the Ranch lot.  Still a short shuttle bus ride but it runs continuously.

If there is clear weather, well worth driving over to Grand Targhee for a day.  It's a fun place to explore.  But I wouldn't want to explore in limited visibility the first time.

What kind of terrain are you looking for?

Thanks for the replies.  As long as conditions are decent, I'll try and check out GT--I hear it takes around an hour or so to get there from Jackson.

I'll ride anything not super moguled out and double black. Think the Teton lift and Saratoga are good places to start out with fresh snow?

That new gondola looks very cool!

I'm doing the same road trip (Minneapolis to JH to Sun Valley to Snowbird) late Jan/early Feb.  I head west to Rapid City on I-90.  Everything after that is basically off the interstate (except short segment on I-25).  Most of it isn't really sketchy, just sparse and boring with not much in the way of food/gas stops.  It gets hilly as you enter Grand Teton NP, and that part can be a bit hairy.  Beautiful drive toward the end, though.  I'm giving myself two and a half days in case of bad weather (leave Friday afternoon after work, arrive sunday afternoon).  I'll probably stay in Mitchell, SD and Casper, WY depending on the weather.  You can definitely make it in two days if the weather cooperates; you just can't count on it in the winter.

Sounds great. I originally thought about staying overnight in Casper, but then I looked at taking I-90 all the way to Buffalo, WY and staying the night there. It's only 15 miles longer via that route, but you are on the freeway for longer so I think I'd make up the time with a higher speed limit and (most likely) better road conditions if things get sketchy. I could always resort to that alternate route if things are sketchy further north with snow.
