Driving through Canada from MI to NY/VT

Anyone have experience driving through Canada from Michigan to New York/Vermont for skiing.  I'd like to take my family East for some larger hill skiing than what we have in Michigan and can save a few hours if we go through Canada than driving down through Ohio.

 

Am I correct that the Michigan enhanced driver's licence for my wife and I as well as copies of my children's birth certificates will be sufficient for entry into Canada and back into the US?

We ski frequently in quebec and come up through Vermont and I believe passports are required now.

Welcome to Epic!

 

Surfsnowgirl is right. Passports or passport cards (I'm not sure how your Michigan license works) will be required for everyone. 

 

School group travel is the only exception (for kids).

 

The Canadian part of that trip, if I recall correctly, is sort of dull (no reflection on the rest of the country), but if it saves you time, go for it!

 

(Edit — I take a school group to Québec annually, which is how I know.)

Yeah, it's flatter than piss on a plate and nothing to look at until you get past London, and even then..

But you do get to go through Niagara Falls if you're dropping down through NY state.  The road down between Windsor and London can be treacherous at times if there are white-out conditions.  No trees and lots of blowing snow so maybe take a peek at the weather before you head out.  And at all costs avoid going through Toronto between 6am and 9pm on most days...  Be aware that our 407 highway is a toll highway but the costs are very high, unlike US toll highways.  A 15 mile trip can cost your $20.  OTOH, the 407 across the top of Toronto can save you an hour or more in drive time depending on the time of day.

Below is a url to answer your border crossing documentation questions.  I know that all I need to cross is my Washington enhanced driver's license, but whether or not your Michigan one is similar is unknown to me.  I know nothing about children's requirements.

It DOES save time. (I used to live in MI and drove to NY more than once)

 

And the flatness of the road means your drive will be mindless ("boring") and relatively fast. 

 

No idea about document requirement though. (I have a passport card)

Traffic in Toronto can be horrific, so plan accordingly.

Enhanced drivers licenses and birth certificates for the kids are all that's required for a land crossing.

Are you going to northern or southern VT?

Southern VT misses the Toronto traffic which at rush hour can set you back an hour or more. Instead, you'll cross at the Niagara River. Your GPS will try to take you across the Queenston-Lewiston bridge, which is nice in its own right, but it doesn't have the Falls view. Take the Rainbow Bridge to see the Falls. Queenston-Lewiston will have the greatest chance of being backed up too... Sometimes it can be an hour... But usually less, especially since the CDN dollar tanked.

If you're going through TO to Northern VT, the 407 can save you time at rush hour, but will run in the neighborhood of $25-30 once you factor in all the charges.

I'm pretty sure the enhanced license and birth certificates are sufficient, but I'd call customs to make sure. Make sure to fill up before you hit Canada, fuel's about 3x or more higher there. I like to stop halfway there in Canandaigua, NY, and get in a night skiing session at Bristol Mountain to warm up. And check out Gore Mountain, I much prefer it to Killington.

Having checked, I've found this to be true. My mistake. 

 

Edit: Apparently, minors aged 15 and below require only a birth certificate (unless traveling with a school group).

While I agree that you want to fill up before leaving US and buy as little fuel in Canada as possible, the difference is not 3X. 

 

Canadian average is just under C$4/gal which is about US$3/gal while US average is around US$2.25 so it is less than 2X.

It depends.  If traffic is flowing at 120kmh and you're in the right lane moving along with it, you're generally safe.  They aren't THAT bad..they do usually understand that situation is a good thing and they don't generally bother picking people off.  However, if it's wide open and you're doing 140kmh, you're done.  And remember if you're doing 50kmh or more over the posted speed limit, they'll impound your car for 7 days and you pick up a criminal charge. 

 

I don't think they're using the plane anymore..I never see it these days.

 

For the most part, traffic flows at 120kmh and if you can control yourself, sit in the right lane and pass at 125kmh and you should not get a ticket.

That should work.  Maybe knock 5 kph off near the end of the month.

Maximum fine for going 50 kph (about 31 mph) is $10,000.

 

Oh, they also have photo radar in Quebec.  Use the cruise.  Update your Tom Tom.
