Need help with skis for a 10-yr old that has become competent all over the mountain

My ten year old son has suddenly jumped to being able (and interested) in skiing steep glades, bowls and bumps and loving it.  Until now he's always had whatever skis that I could find: good quality like Volkl AC Unlimited and Elan 'Race', but never chosen specifically for his style or ability.  I feel like it's time for him to have a ski that will suit him and encourage his continued improvement.

He's 145cm (4'9") tall, 72 pounds, slight build and athletic.  He's adventurous, moderately speedy, but methodical - no charging off out of control.  Level 7?  We ski coastal Pacific-NW mountains.

I'm thinking he's deserving of something a little more capable off-piste (he's only ever had carvers).  Thus far, I've come across Rossignol Smash 7 and Volkl Mantra Jr.

Does anyone have an opinion on these, or have any alternative suggestions?  Any general advice for length at this age and level would also be great.

I teach a seasonal kids program, my kids were 11 and 12 this past season, and half of them were on the Mantra or Gotama. Both good skis for that age and that purpose. Haven't seen kids with the Smash, but I've heard good stuff about that one too. For length, something around chin-to-nose level, so mid-to-high 130 range. Maybe look at the Line Tom Wallisch Shorty as well.

DS has the Volkl Mantra Jr and loves it, and it's not too bad on groomers when you need it. DD is on the K2 Shreditor Jr. Also a really nice ski - she says it makes her feel like she's "on a boogie board but standing up." Yup, that's a direct quote. The Shreditor comes in a 75 and an 85. Your DS is still pretty light, so I'm sure he could do either width. If he's level 7, somewhere between 140 and 145 cm should be good. I know it's bad habit - but we actually try and get skis a little long so they last 2 seasons - and so far it's worked for us. The kids have never complained about skis being too long :)

Thanks guys.

Thankfully, the two years on the ski approach seems to be working for us, too.

I just checked his current skis and he was already on 140cm in the latter part of last season.  The significant(?) rocker on the proposed skis makes me think you may need to buy on the long side.  Say, 148 on the Mantra and 150 on the Rossis (as opposed to 138 and 140)?

I've got a used pair of Volkl Gotama Jr (I think around 148 - I gotta check) I can sell cheap - was going to put them out tomorrow at a garage sale.  Not sure where in the PNW you're at - I'm north of Seattle / south of Everett. PM me if interested
