The article posted earlier in the week--An EpicSki Interview with James Niehues--was one of the most enjoyable projects I've gotten to work on in my seven years here on EpicSki. I am also happy to announce that it is the 500th article published on EpicSki!
I felt that was worthy of a call out, because I think there is a lot of fantastic user generated content in our Articles section that often goes unnoticed or is forgotten about. In a recent thread asking for suggestions, it was mentioned that there have been more featured items on the Home Page from our Articles section. This is not representative of a lack of other content as some insinuated, but rather is representative of the fact that I've been actively trying to get more exposure to some excellent content that is often buried. For example this past week I promoted two articles published a few years ago; one by @Bob Peters (originally published in Powder Mag.) with his story of skiing in the Jackson Hole Backcountry, the other by @Tyrone Shoelaces which was a poetic epic to the journey that skiing took his life on. Both articles have been on EpicSki for a long time, long enough ago that a great number of the currently active posters weren't around when they were posted.
Articles like those are fantastic, but only get a handful of views a month (if that). While it might not be too noticeable to the community because it doesn't often spur a discussion, there is a lot of interest generated by featuring those articles. They jump up to get hundreds of views over the week or so that I leave them on the homepage. I plan to continue to post some articles week to week on our homepage because the Epic community has created so much great content. For example there is a new category (that is going to be growing with some new articles I have in the pipeline) called Interviews and Experiences where you'll find things like that Jim Niehues interview, as well articles like last winters most popular article "A Life in the Night of a Snowcat Operator" or a piece about EpicSki's oldest poster the now 91 year old @oldfool91.
Also in the articles you'll find things like the 40 plus Unofficial Guides, a whole series of Pictorials about many resorts across North America by @Jamesj (as well as his Geezer Ski Bum Tour articles), and everything from the basics of equipment buying, to timeless instructional articles by top industry professionals.
So take a moment to check out some of the 500 and growing articles here on EpicSki if you haven't already! If you have a suggestion for an article (or want to write something yourself) please comment here or send me a PM.
