Will Winter Park or Steamboat be Busiest the weekend before Christmas?

December 15 - 21 I'll be skiing Winter Park/Steamboat.

Is Steamboat going to be less busy than Winter Park that weekend?

One issue what that is that I'll need to rent skis for my son and nephew.  Is there a place in Steamboat I can rent them and return them in Winter Park to avoid going through the rental process twice?

I would check with someone like Black Tie Ski Rentals. There are a couple of others also but can't remember the names. If Christy's comes up I would absolutely confirm with both locations and get names. Sorry, I can't help with which one might be more crowded.

That week will be busy everywhere. WP will be packed with people from CO and Steamboat will be packed with out of towers. No, you won't be able to return skis to a different place, but if you're coming through Denver, you can rent in the city/ Golden. You should decide resort based on accommodations and how much driving you'll have to do - WP will have horrible traffic but easier parking. Both incredible resorts though, can't go wrong once you get on the snow :)

I always thought the busy week was the week after Christmas?

Are we talking 15 minute lift lines? Define busy. I've skied the week after Christmas in West Virginia with 20 minutes or more lift long lines... Hated that.

That's right, it gets busy starting the 26th. Tipically the days before xmas are some of the least busy of the winter. WP is closer to denver so it will be a little busier on the weekend, especially if there is a big storm. Overall I wouldn't expect any lines at either for your dates.

Week after Christmas is worse but all holidays are very busy. On xmas and new years will be the only let up. I taught skiing so I had to be at the resort on all holidays for the last 10 yrs... I would expect waits that long first run, but you can probably avoid waiting later in the day if you don't go to the base and ski through lunch time and very end of day.

That's what we normally do.

We're getting the Maxx Pass, so I'm wondering if Crested Butte or Copper Mountain would be less busy the week before Christmas?  I'm just wondering if there's one that's typically less busy.

I go to Colorado the week before Xmas every year.... Just booked flights to EGE Dec 16-23...

We don't pick a resort until a few days before we arrive based on conditions ...

The crowds steadily increase each day - but its usually not that bad until right before Xmas week ... ...

Although its always a crap shoot that early in the season - Between Steamboat, Vail/BC and Aspen we usually find good snow and light crowds...

I think Copper would be one of the busiest that week. Created Butte is generally less busy than most resorts, but I've never been there over the holiday. Also consider the driving for both- no problem if you're staying at the resort, but the drive Denver-Copper is generally bad, Gunnison-CB is hit and miss it's a 2 land 30 mi highway so bad weather or crowds would be rough. There is a local bus for CB and there is generally minimal traffic.

Copper *can* be busy but more so on the weekend days.  During the week is not as bad as other places.  This year Christmas is on a Sunday.  I believe most of the front range, with the exception of 1 county, only get Thu and Fri off from school.  I believe Douglas County gets out on the 15th, and it is a populated county, so there mostly likely will be some heading to their favorite mountain.  Odds are good that Copper will not be bad on Mon-Thu.   The drive ... :dunno    You're guess is as good as mine.  What Heather said.

Thanks. So Copper would probably be busier than Winter Park on the weekends?

No, I doubt that.  WP is usually busier than Copper on weekends, IMO.  However, the drive from Copper anywhere East on a weekend evening after skiing is high chance of an I-70 $hi+ show.

As others have stated, the week between Christmas and New Year's is always one of the worst for crowds.  The week before is less with crowds getting larger as it gets closer to Christmas.  Dec 23-24 could be busy.  I think you'll be fine at WP and/or Steamboat the time of Dec 15-21.  We stayed at WP last year on the weekend before Christmas and crowds were not bad.  I plan on being at WP in Dec before Christmas this year as well.
