2016 Kastle MX88 or 2017 Kastle MX89 ?

I presently own a demo 2014 Kastle MX88, after quite a bit to get the edges correct I enjoy the ski very much but hate....really hate the K12 CTi demo bindings.  It doesn't make sense to replace the binds on this older ski so I'm considering a newer replacement.  The question is:  2016 Kastle MX88 for $850 (left over discounted) or 2017 MX89 for $1,200+ ?

Are the changes in the MX89 worth the price premium?

Where do you ski?

I haven't tried the 89's, but I like the 98 better than the 88.

East coast.  Home slopes are in NJ (1-3 times a week).  Moonlight in Windham, NY and Blue Mountain, PA each season as well.  Bring on the ice....!  Don't really want to go wider than that for that reason.  My previous skis were 75, 77, and 81 width and when mother nature dump a few inches or the slopes dumped a few man made, I always sunk deep, the 88 width is a nice all-around I found for me.

But the question still remains, does the new MX89 worth the price premium over the older MX88?  1mm wider width should't make any difference but the enlarged hollow in the tips could be something?

Has anyone skied on both?

I've been on both and would say the main differences are the change in the lengths and the change in the radius.  The older model is 168, 178 and 188; new model has a 172, 180 and 188.  All the radii have reduced a couple of metres (or so).  The 178cm MX88 has a 20m radius, whereas the new 180cm MX89 has a radius of 18m.  The feel of the new ski is substantially the same. I didn't ski them back-to-back, but have demoed the MX88 a number of times, demoed the MX89 about six weeks back, and the MX78 is my 'daily driver'.

Somewhere in there may be a catalyst for your decision.  Otherwise I suspect you'd be happy on either model.

Best of luck.

Thank you for the explanation between them.

It sounds like based on your opinion the only real difference between them is the reduced turning radius, outside of that they ski/feel the same.  The MX89 may be slightly longer but the enlarged hollow point tip enables the shorter turning radius despite the longer length.

Did I summarize correctly?

My height is 177cm so the 180cm will be slightly taller than me.  Doesn't sound like the extra $700 for the MX89 is worth it for someone who simply enjoying the mountain skiing speeds between 20-45mph.

Given your size there may be a consideration around whether you'd like the 172 length of the new model v's the 178 of the older model (the 168cm MX88 seems a bit short for you).  Otherwise it's about a wash between the two and you might as well save the extra money.  The newer model will no doubt be worth more if you're looking to sell them again in a couple of years, and that might be a consideration.

I tried the 168cm size and it was way too short.  I had 171cm in Volk RTM81 and though the length was good I noticed the faster I went the more I felt like I was going to take off like an airplane.  I don't have that issue with the 2014 Kastle MX88 in 178cm.  The only reason why I have been going though skis quicker than normal because I give them to my son who keeps growing and skill improving.  But now that he is plateauing I should be able to keep my skis for at least 5 seasons for myself.

So whichever ski I purchase: 2016 MX88 or 2017 MX89 will be for at least 5 seasons.
