Mammoth Mountain for 2016-2017 - Page 14

Good skiing at Mammoth this weekend. Sat was crowded but Sun was good--good hard pack corns until about 11 and then it started softening up.

I flew in for the first time this weekend. The Bombardier prop plane wasn't bad at all. A bit noiser than the jet but decent cell reception as it doesn't fly as high.

I'm thinking...It would be nice to have a locker at the Canyon lodge to store my ski gear so that I don't have to haul everything by air every trip. I could just fly from work to Mammoth for the weekend instead of flying home. Maybe once or twice a month.

It looks like they have changed the start date for using next year's passes at Mammoth to 4/1. Since we are going up for 4 or 5 days starting 4/1 it is now very tempting!

Sweet!!!

NoChaser, my buddy has a locker at Main for that very reason.  Flies in for 3-4 days twice a month, goes up to Main, bam, boom, he is out skiing.  If you have the cash to do it, it must be darn nice.

Me, I will drive, as it is cheaper, I can take more gear and my car goes through stuff that diverts a flight to SF ;)

Weather permitting (not to warm) we should all hit it the first weekend in April.  Maybe the 6th thru the 9th???

CYA 4/2

I am glad they changed it.  However, I just arranged time off work and booked a long weekend April 19-23rd.  I would much rather have been going during the week of April 3rd when I am off work and the whole mountain is still open.  Drat it all!  Oh well, it's still skiing. Right?

I spoke to Customer Service at Mammoth on 03/15/17, and I was told that they are now planning to keep the entire mountain open an additional week.  They plan to be open through 04/23/17.  They also confirmed the start date for the Mammoth passes as 04/01/17.

Great news! We are going up the 21st - 23rd.

The seasonal locker pays for itself in 6 trips:
- American to MMH--no baggage fee
- United flight out--$60 for two large baggages
Vs
- $370 for a seasonal locker

The problem (?) is I expense my baggage fees. But it is a real pain hauling gear and luggage.

Flights are easily justified. I pay one way to Mammoth which is less than $100 and expense the flight to work. Vs
$120 gas+hours for car travels.

Plus I can just fly whenever the hell I want and ski...

Can't really find downsides here...

Or just leave the stuff at the hotel...

Nah

Locker

EDIT:
For 17/18 season the rates are:
- Standard $390 - fits 2 sets of equipment
- Jumbo $470 - fits 4 sets of equipment
One set of equipment - skis / snowboard

Downside is the flight cancels often because of weather and you can get stuck.

Anyone have a lead on a two to three month rental in Mammoth for a family of four and a ski coach? Have a friend who will be training two girls starting 1 April for the remainder of the season.

That would certainly be a problem... for SF or LA? Do they let you pick any day to fly if cancelled due to weather?

It looks like our window to ski is 18-21 April, but we'll be in SFO. Would have to drive around Tahoe to get to Mammoth? If so, feeling like I'd just stop at Squaw and ski there, even though I don't expect the conditions to be as nice...
Yeah I don't think the Tioga pass will be open till summer. Makes it a very long drive from SF
post #407 of 608

Not really sure. They usually CNX at the departure point if they cannot get in. Have seen on one occasion where two departures did not get out. That was 7 or 8 years ago and I think they have improved the navigation aids to allow lower takeoff and landing minimums.

Heading up early tomorrow to catch this storm. Luckily I happen to have a couple days off. Wish it was wed/thurs but I'll take what I can get. If anyone is around send a pm I'll be hanging with a rowdy bunch!
Mammoth is skiing really great. Soft turns everywhere but Avy chutes were incredible. Top closed of course so tomorrow could be amazing if it opens. Probably 20" have fallen on top

We are headed up for the week, going to get there Sunday evening. Hopefully there will be some fresh snow :

"What is noteworthy is the Sunday night and Monday system. This storm is not any stronger based on the amount of cold air. However, it is forecasted to NOT split as it crosses the sierra. That alone will bring better snowfall amounts to the sierra crest and town. Possibly 12 to 18 inches over the crest, “If it comes through consolidated.”https://opensnow.com/dailysnow/mammoth

Somewhere around chair 22. Ill be back April 3-6 if anyone is around and would like to make some turns. Cant wait!!!

socalgal,  thanks for that heads up.  I will watch what the NWS states for Monday & Tuesday and see if I can make a quick trip.  The above pic has me motivated. :D

Can't wait either. My likely last official planned trip to Mammoth for the season coming up next week.

I'm debating whether I should renew C4 for next yr...Does any one know long term forecast for next season. Someone call Trump to make it snow again.

I'm still debating between the Calipass and MCP. MCP, has 4 tickets to Alta/Bird next year and the next year's epic gathering is there. 4 days at Utah and 3 free at Mammoth is tempting...

@agreen, great pic

At least 3 months premature IMHO.

Liz has decided to get MCP plus Cali lift pass for 2017-18.  I believe she will get the Cali pass every other year because you get spring of the current season.  I think that 2017-18 Cali pass will be paid for by this July, leaving all of next season as a bonus.  5 days at AltaBird are close to break even on the MCP so even one more puts her ahead on that.

Any such forecast made now is completely worthless.  If you see one, ignore it.

Mammoth has the Cali4ornia Premium Pass that includes the same benefits as MCP, minus the two free days at each resort, plus all of the benefits of the standard Cali4ornia Pass.

Cost for Premium Pass is 100.00 more than standard Mammoth pass.  Premium Pass also includes 7 Bring A Friend tickets.

You can get at least 6 free days in UT since Snowbasin has been added to MCP

I agree. I'm hoping to add more "unofficial" ones. Those are low key strategically placed under the radar hit and run trips that my wife will barely notice.

I had C4Prem a few yrs ago but concluded I made a mistake...It's more economical to buy MCP+C4 than C4Prem if one plans on traveling a lot. 50% of $100-$150 per day adds up very quickly. Price diff between C4Prem and MCP+C4 is $300. In less than 5 days of skiing at non-C4 MCP areas, you basically break even.

agreen,

Great shot! I recognize it even though my last day there was 7/4/05. I taught kids out of Canyon, most of the time LOVED it, and that added benefit of skiing one of my top 5 resorts of the 37 I've bagged thus far was a "minor benefit." So was meeting my twin, my roommate and still friend Julien while in the "spendy $7/night, utils included" employee housing aka The 'goose.

It was another bonus that I got to do laps with my childhood hero Glen Plake on July 4th. Definitely my best 4th ever. I miss that place, but love the fun, smiles I made, lifetime skiers I created, and the best day and best week of my life thus far. (The best day wasn't part of the best week, the best week involved getting paid $20/hr by the end of the season plus tips teaching a de facto private to a 6 yr old French kid who played soccer, NOT Nintendo. We were doing laps down Cornice by the first afternoon, he was carving dynamic parallel turns with the same form the good skier in black in your photo has, separation of his core and legs, keeping his core vertical, he was a natural. I definitely would've taught him all 3 days for free I had so much fun. Bonus: His parents tipped me $20 on Thursday and Friday. Unfortunately we had 2 or 3 more kids with us so the top was off limits Friday. No worries, he worked on carving and really got it by the end of the day!

PS The French kid was 6. (All 4-6 yr olds have to wear bibs so that they're easier to keep track of cause sometimes teaching kids skiing is like herding cats!!!) 😋 biggrin.gif

Thanks Schump! Great story. I hope you make it back there one day. It is a great mountain and is amazing what that stiff wind can do to the conditions. Not to mention the variety of terrain. I chased a midweek storm, skiing through it (so no top), and found untouched wind buffed powder all day long. Never stood in a lift line. Of course it's a bit different on weekends and holidays. But even when crowded you can find your spots. BTW the skier in black is me so thanks very much for the compliment!
