I've been involved in the pretty high level race world for decades, as one example. And I've had more than a toe in the water in most every other aspect of the business over about five decades. Our adult kids work full time in it. I think I have some perspective. I always hoped to add to the conversation. Many of that group is simply gone. No interest, I guess.
I do enjoy checking in here. But I really don't enjoy posting. I'm a reasonably easy guy to get along with, and I have a pretty thick skin. Good friends say I have no ego; perhaps more direct to this post, I surely don't need to create some internet presence for my self esteem. But nobody likes to be challenged and to be asked to defend things, etc. I've had more of those lately. No thanks. It's not like this is something that I need to do. My wife, a former national team athlete, thinks this place is "dumb,", and always asks me why I care, why I waste time on here. Maybe she's been right all along!
I was thinking about posting on a tire thread. I bet I've driven more ski miles in more cars, with the tires being asked about than anybody on here. But, no, I could see right where it was headed.....train wreck. No thanks. The cluelessly bold had descended.
The rudeness, the passive aggressive behavior, and those who insist on "the last word" have become over the top, IMO. When a really articulate and knowledgeable poster offers insight and information here, the chances are pretty high that the irrational, bold, and yes, clueless, will come back flaming. That gets old. It's almost predictable. We all see it too much. In fact depending on the topic, you can guess very reasonably at who will be there to strike down any and all reasonable points. As the knowledgable folks withdraw, that group who really seem to enjoy being the internet ski wizards are left. Very unfortunate. You can be whoever you choose to be on the internet. And on this forum, we all know that we have a lot of self professed experts. Some truly are. Some are just not. Absolutely not. Not close.
I have no idea how you change the culture and behavior of a forum when it's slipping, but it seems like this one has changed for the worse. There's very little of any value to me. It is all entertainment.
When we're at the point where a member posts a pair of skis for sale, and the first three posts are other community members arguing that the price is too high, REALLY, is that necessary? Ha! Is that helping......PM the seller, and be respectful. Help them.
I'm not going away, yet. Just lying low. If I pick one "place", it will clearly be Pugski. Check it out, BTW.
