Family ski trip where everyone can ski black and most can ski at least some double black. We are not focused on nightlife or infrastructure and would gladly trade snow quality and terrain for infrastructure (Alta is my favorite). Shorter lift lines during that holiday week would also be a plus, if there's likely to be a significant difference between resorts. I love powder (especially in the trees), and want to maximize my chance to enjoy some floating, plus I also want the rest of my family to develop more confidence in the deep stuff -- so I can rationalize more family cat skiing. I only get to take one family ski trip each year, and December ski trips always make me a bit nervous. I've started researching interior BC and initially focused in on Whitewater/Red Mtn or Revelstoke or Fernie (based mainly on Crocker's historical general data and some resort website scanning). Typically, I'd take the easy way out and book a flight to SLC and then drive to whichever resort in the area had the best snow (Alta, Powder, etc), but I've got a little more time during xmas and the family is up for more of an adventure.
Given my focus on snow quality, any perspectives on which resort/area you think might be the best bet? Any others I should consider?
(I live in Chicago, so I'm stuck with connecting flights, unless I fly to Calgary and drive... which may be fairly equivalent travel time and it currently appears to be a cheaper option for flights and rental SUV, but I'm guessing the ability to drive to a resort from Calgary could also add significantly to lift lines)
