IMO, the silver lining for Vail and perhaps the North American ski industry is that Vail will be involved on the ground floor of the WB Renaissance Project.
Whistler never does anything on a small scale and while the project still needs Whistler Village Council approval, its main focus is implementing and enhancing summer outdoor activities and the resultant increase in summer tourist visits. This could result in the new business model for ski resorts to survive the effects of global warming by shifting more to a year round destination resort.
The Vail Epic Summer Pass may be next and coming to a Vail resort near you.
Already a step in that direction this year. For the first time you could get a season bike haul pass that was good at all the resorts offering bike haul. In the past it only covered some of the areas. My bike haul pass also gets me scenic rides just as an Epic Pass does. That matters these days since I'm on an employee pass now which is only seasonal. In the summer I'm just another tourist, but one without an Epic Pass. Might have to start MTB instructing in the summer to get all my passes covered.
