Old qualification still valid

Hi,

I got my PSIA Level 1 in 2001 and was looking at getting back into teaching again. Any tips and guides as to what has changed, new methods, new qualifications i may need? Also who can i contact to get a copy of my certs?

Welcome to Epic and welcome back to the team Joff (in advance). Presuming you haven't paid dues for the last 15 years, your certification has lapsed. You won't need current certification to get a job teaching at 99% of US resorts. A level 1 cert only bumps you up one step from rookie anyway and it will probably be cheaper to redo the exam than reinstate, Contact your division office if you want to get records. Mentioning that you have previous experience teaching and achieved level 1 cert will help you get hired and probably expedite your new hire training a little.

You will probably have to pay PSIA a small fortune to get your cert current if you haven't been paying dues. But they generally don't make people retake the test. Also, as stated before, most resorts hire without qualification and only some ask you to get it within the first year- maybe try it out again and see if it's worth it. Contact your local region office the see how much they'll charge.

They won't force you retake the test. But they're very up front in my division (Eastern) that it's smarter and much cheaper if you're a lapsed L1 to just start over from scratch. Especially since there isn't a First Tracks requirement anymore.

I was an L1 that lapsed for 5 years. Rejoined, retook my L1 that January. Saved me a bundle, and I got two free days of skiing at Smuggs.

PSIA-NW has a reinstatement policy. I'm not sure what the threshold is for it. One of our staff let his dues lapse and ended up just retaking the L1 exam as it was cheaper.
