GS skis for a HS racer

Thread Starter
I'm looking for a good pair of gs skis for high school racing. I have a pair of slalom skis but I want to take my gs racing to the next level as I have been skiing nastar for years and gs is what I'm better at. I currently ski gs on a old pair of Nordica gs/all mountain skis and they aren't cutting it any more. I live in Wisconsin so we don't have the most spread out of courses due to the low vertical hills we have so I would prefer a ski with a smaller radius. Im 5 11 and I weigh 147 so I'm not a very large guy. Im only skiing high school so I don't need a ski to conform to FIS or USSA standards. Im a expert level skier and I have skied all over so as far as skill, I should be fine but its just that im not a large built world cup skier. I have been skiing since I was 3. Im 16 now and it's my second year of racing as I just recently found a racing program. Im looking at gs skis and I'm seeing some good deals now. Im just not sure on what pair is best for me. I'm thinking a gs r pair but I don't know. Thanks!

Hi - First, normally would recommend a women's FIS, but if this is your first try, the radius might be a bit intense. So would recommend FIS spec GS for U16; will give you superior grip and stability over a rec carver, and still be quite manageable. You can actually be competitive. As a lighter guy, you might look at Rossi or Volkl or Dynastar. Look for a 175-182, lightly used on eBay. Since you'll outgrow them.

What advice has your coach(es) given you? What are other successful HS skiers in your area skiing on for GS? If you're in a race program, these folks probably have very good ideas that will fullfill your specific needs. And FWIW, Yes, you're light, but it shouldn't stop you from being successful at your current level or participation.
