Hi all, this is just to start the ball rolling for 2016.
The 3 Valley base is is already building, with around 20 to 60cm of snow above 2,900m. Unusual early rains in April plus toxic south pacific algae blooms would indicate that El Niño is influencing the weather, even though Santiago finally had a 20% deficit of rain last year. So maybe a belated surge of storms will set this season up sooner than normal, which is what we are all hoping for! Powder has already been skied (human powered fanatics)!
Moderator note: moved to International Zone
El Colorado in April.
La Parva, also in April:
This base has mostly settled/melted now, but there is more in the forecast....
The high freezing level so far hasn´t provided much snow on the volcanoes, aside from the upper cones, but this is normal for May. Southern Chile is running a 50% deficit in rain, but perhaps we will get a repeat of last year, when a drought ended just when the freezing level started to drop in May, Corralco was the first ski area to open in Chile (June), and after frequent snow and rain, the last to close late October.
I am available to field questions from epic ski potential visitors to Chile. Detail on the weather and conditions and more for 2016 can be found here http://bit.ly/SkiChile2016
Pray for snow!
