Spellcheck

Thread Starter

Just answered a post and spell check didn't work. Got an error message with some gibberish and ending in "No word lists can be found for the languager en-US." MSN explorer browser with Windows 7 SP1.

Hi Bill,

Have you tried restarting your computer. Also have you tried a different browser. The Spell Check function is handled by your browser rather than by the EpicSki platform software. I'd suggest trying to restart first, and if you still have problems please try it in another browser and let me know if it persists as I've been unable to reproduce the issue.

Restart didn't help

IE11 Browser didn't help

Chrome didn't help

I can't copy the complete error message and it is too convoluted to write it down and retype it.

The error message does say "message from webpage", if that helps.

I will try a different computer tomorrow and let you know if that makes a difference.

How does one do spellcheck? Is there an icon? Not seeing it in Desktop or Mobile modes.

OK, here is a screenshot of the error message:

I just tried it and got the same error message.

Sibhusky, there's an ABC√  icon on the tool bar that you click on to initiate a spell check while creating a post.

Mac, El Capitan, Safari.

Here you go...

Strange.  I can see the print screen above when I edit this.  How about I copy to paint and see if I can upload.  Yes!

Ah now I see what you guys are doing; didn't realize you were using the spell check built in to the editor...actually never even realized there was one. If you just right click on the word your browser has a spell check function. I am reporting this though to get it fixed.

Browser spell checker hasn't ever worked within the post box for me.  I've been using the editor spell checker for a long while with no problems, so there's definitely something that went kablooey.

@SkiMangoJazz if you have it expanded to show all the editing tools you have to hold the control button (I assume command on Mac) when you right click to use the browser spell check. If you hit the less button to use the basic tools you can just right click like normal.

I've been told this is a known issue and they're working on it.

What never works for me though is the @ mention as you see above.  Any idea why?

Are you doing what is described in this Usage Tips post about @ messaging?

@ messaging aka AT Messaging

Using an @ message is helpful in order to alert a particular user to a post/thread.  Most users get a notification email and will be less likely to miss a post/thread of interest.

@ messaging differs between Desktop and Mobile mode.  Mobile users should look for an AT button.

To notify an EpicSki member using @ messaging, type the AT sign and immediately start typing the username (no space).  A drop-down list will appear.  You must pick the user name off the list.  Then ATUserName will appear in blue.  Note that capitalization and spaces matter.  Typing ATGat for the Gathermeister is different from ATgat.  If you don't see the user name, check that you have the spelling and spacing correct.  The search function can be hard to understand sometimes.  After you Submit your post, double-check that the AT username is in blue.  Should be able to click on it and link to the user's Profile Page.

Note that although the method is similar to a @ notification in Facebook, it has nothing to do with Facebook.

For example, @TheRusty is not the same as @TheRusty .  The first is a proper @ message and a link, the second is not a link and will not generate a notification email.  If the user does not have @ messaging notification turned on, then they will not get a notification email.

To check your Notification settings, go to your Profile Page and click on Edit Account Details.  @ messaging is covered by "Notify me when people mention me."  Also good to check My Info to make sure the email address listed is current.

Thanks @marznc this worked, there was no dropdown list though, it didn't turn blue until I'd typed your entire handle.  This is on desktop mac.

Let's try it again  @SkiMangoJazz worked.  So it works differently than the description but does seem to work.

@SkiMangoJazz I typed that in all lower case and when I hit the space bar at the end it corrected it to upper and lower case.

Glad you figured it out.  @ messaging is a useful feature.  Assuming the user messaged has @ notifications turned on.

The auto-lookup can be slow.  I usually type a few letters and wait.  Upper and lower case can confuse the search sometimes, same with spaces and punctuation.  "Mr. Crab" always messes me up because I forget the period.  For you, needed to type "skimang" before your username showed up on the dropdown list.

As I understand it, you won't get a notification when you @ message yourself.

@marznc no popup appears when I use it.  I waited a while.

For me I just have to type the full username after the @ sign and then a space to indicate the name is complete it then turns blue.

And you're right, I wasn't notified of @ing myself.  (Better than outing myself I guess.)

To clarify you won't be notified if you @ yourself or if you are mentioned in some place your don't have access to like a PM or private forum.

Hey guys, sorry to inform you that it looks like you'll have to use the spell-check built into the browser (using the instructions I gave above) instead of the spell check built into the text editor. I've been informed that they're not planning on fixing it because it's a "low priority issue and they're afraid attempts to fix it will break other things". Sorry about that, believe me that this type of stuff is extremely frustrating for me.

Maybe they should remove the icon... Which I can't see on Android anyway.

But it does make me wonder. What high priority stuff are they working on?

Agree on the icon.   Does make you wonder if Huddler is Huddling off.

They are and there's not a whole lot we can do about it. They were bought by Wikia and from what I can tell basically they gutted their development team to put them to work on Wikia projects instead of doing anything with Huddler. The only work they've been doing is back-end stuff like database management. The problem is converting off the Huddler platform isn't easy either. It requires hiring a very skilled programmer to do a couple months of custom coding and even then stuff may get lost in the conversion just because of the sheer complicated nature of the Huddler database structure (unless you want to pay for another full month of work to save the little details like reputation scores, feedback comments, etc etc.).

That sucks.  I always wondered about the Huddler adoption.  vBulletin is just so much more reliable long term.

Not really, vB is going through the same thing--lacking development--plus a major security flaw recently. There's a reason that PugSki is on XenForo and my guess is because that's what I recommended to them that we try to covert EpicSki to if we were able. It doesn't have the maturity of vB, but is more modern and under heavier development.

Hey all @Bill Miles @sibhusky @SkiMangoJazz @marznc

As much as I do have to complain about Huddler, looks like I need to pull my foot out of my mouth on this one. I had two open tickets one about Spellcheck and one about some issues with HTML tags being stripped in the BBCode editor. When I got the notification on my phone it all got merged into one thread and so the email I got was actually saying that the other issue with HTML tags isn't going to be fixed, the issues with Spellcheck are ticketed and they're currently working on a fix.
