The pass decreasing in price has never happened, but likely they put that in just in case.
The deal your neighbor got offered for "apply today's ticket towards next yeas pass" is compeltely different.
As far as the offer. I've replied about it in other threads and I'm sure if you search here you can find about next year pass's offers.
Every single vail resort i've been to in spring (for past several years) it's always been a closer deal when epicpasses are on sale that you could apply today's ticket towards the ski pass (if you went in at the end of the day).
They do not advertise this online. Previous years they have flyers at lunch. This year, many of the host staff had pins that said "Ski free today, ask how". If you planned to get a pass and they were selling it, you could've stopped in or asked what the deal was.
It maynot be too late, call them and ask.
As resorts go, Vail is probably the most transparent in it's "deals" by the nature that there are very few to no deals.
You were perfectly fine spending that money because it's something that was already spent; the only reason psychologically it's human nature to get angry isn't because you spent the money, but because you know someone else got a better deal than you and they felt they "lost out" in a comparative race.
So in fact, you should be more POed more frequently at other resort when you hear about whoever got a better discount than you when oh I got 50% off at wendys or this deal for buying 8gallons of gas, or entering this secret code or buying at safeway or other random stuff that you really don't want to jump through hoops for other than the fact that "someone else" is getting a deal.
