I'm new to cycling having gotten back on a bike a couple of years ago after not riding since I was a kid (40 + years ago). We used to ride bikes for transportation as kids back in the day. I needed something to do for exercise when our outdoor community pool closed and I couldn't swim laps after Labor Day and got on an old bike, liked riding, and then bought a decent used hybrid off Craigslist.
Anyhow my brother has gone out to Colorado for this event the last few years and I thought I'd give it a shot. I'm wondering what kind of training you're doing if you ride in these events. I'm in NJ and there are no mountains to speak of but I will be seeking out some hillier routes. I have a normal 16 mile route I take after work each day and will expand my weekend route to 40 miles or so at least one weekend day.
I am shooting for the 80 mile/day (2 days) route at the CC, but I am really concerned about the hills and the altitude. I'm pretty sure I could ride 80 miles a day right now on a road bike if I take breaks, but hills/mountain climbs are a whole 'nother ballgame as you know. I'm also concerned that it will be difficult to ride a road bike as I have never ridden one and am not accustomed to the shifters. I plan on renting a bike in Denver off spinlister.
Anybody riding in this event and any tips besides increasing the length of training rides? I have over 4 months to get ready.
