I'm looking to rent demos at Wolf Creek and they give the option to choose your specific ski in advance. I'm considering the below options. I'd prefer to wait until I arrive to know more about the conditions but the shop at Wolf requires a few days' notice, otherwise I risk getting whatever they have in stock when I arrive and quantities on their website are already quite limited.
For reference, I'm ~155#, 5'8", advanced skier but not a hard charger and I generally avoid cliffs/air. I usually ski something around a 175. Probably my favorite ski in recent years was the Soul 7, but I had it in some light powder and optimal conditions. I loved how light and playful it skied, it was super easy to ski well in those conditions. I'm small and light myself so sometimes really stiff skis aren't the best for me, but I do still like some of them especially when they blast through crud. Going back a ways (5+ years ago) I liked the Dynastar Mythic Rider and felt that was a heavier, stiffer ski at the time but loved how it blasted through crud.
177 Volkl Mantra - heard great reviews, I think it's going to be too stiff.
177 Volkl Kendo - skied it at Tahoe a month ago. Liked it, didn't love it, this is my safe pick.
170/184 Volkl 90 Eight - know little about it other than tech specs and seems like an good match for me. Shop is currently out of the 177 size, which might be deal breaker.
178 Salomon Rocker 100 - Early favorite from specs. Softer than Mantra but many other similarities, haven't seen many reviews though.
Does anyone know how the stiffness between the Rocker 100 and 90 Eight compare? The reviews I've read seem to favor the Volkl in terms of edging and stability, which leads me to believe it's stiffer. The Salomon seems to have reviews about playfulness similar to my personal experience with the Soul 7. I'm pretty torn between these 2 at the moment. The lack of a 177 size for the Volkl may make my decision for me, although in general I'd favor Volkl over Salomon.
