2016/17 Mountain Collective road trip.

This years MCP tour is taking my Aussie family (kids are 8 and 10) to Snowbird, Alta, Whistler and Lake Louise/Sunshine in less than two weeks - super pumped for it. I'm about to buy our 16/17 pass and have to nominate our bonus third day at one of the ski hills. Next year we will be travelling to North America about the same time (late March) so we'll have to stick with relatively high elevation mountains. We're thinking of Mammoth, Squaw, Alta/Snowbird and Aspen. Would it be best to start or finish at Aspen (finish of the trip would be early April). Is Aspen reliable at that time? We've never skiied Colorado before so the third day would be good there. Or are we best off just taking the third day at Mammoth as it has a longer season?
Thanks in advance.

Take the bonus day at Aspen.  It has great snow conditions at that time, no crowds, fast lifts, and the town is awesome.  Snowmass is huge and your family will have a blast skiing there.  The four ski areas at Aspen I think are the best for skiing in all of Colorado.  I would finish in April at Aspen for sure.

Are you going to drive or fly between the four places?  In two weeks?  My friends and I (all adults) did a 2-week MCP tour mid-season based on flying to SLC that included Sun Valley (2 ski days, 4 hr drive from SLC), Alta/Snowbird (3 days), and Aspen (4 days, 7 hr drive from SLC). Was fun but I would not want to add a 4th destination.  I know Alta well and had been to Aspen once before.  Definitely need at least 3 days at Aspen in order to explore at least 3 out of the 4 mountains.

For 2014-15 I got the bonus day at Aspen.  But I knew I would be in Denver in late March for another reason.  My ski buddy picked me up in Denver.  We skied A-Basin on the way to Aspen.  Had a powder day at Snowmass.  Spring skiing at Ajax the next day.  Total slush by the following afternoon at Highlands with temps in the 60s at the base.  We drove to Alta for our annual stay at Alta Lodge afterwards.  Mixed conditions the next two weeks in LCC in early April, including a few powder storms.  Aspen closes earlier in April than Alta.  Snowbird stays open even longer.  Of course, closing dates are mostly business decisions and not based on snow coverage in late season.  Obviously, no way to predict conditions for late season 2017 at this point.

Perhaps @Tony Crocker will stop by.  His home mountain is Mammoth.

I would recommend finishing in Mammoth in April. They always seem to get great snow at that time.

The trip may be longer than two weeks. We'll probably fly in on the 24th of March and could jump straight on a plane to Denver from there I guess. Do a few days at Aspen then drive our way west. We've skiied Mammoth before and loved it but we haven't been to Alta/Snowbird yet (we'll be there in two weeks). If we don't like Altabird for some reason we could skip that next year I suppose.

I think it would be pretty unusual for you to not like Alta/Snowbird. ;)  You might add your dates to the ongoing LCC thread if you have any interest in potentially meeting up with other Bears.

Wait till you finish your trip before deciding on which place to go and which mountain as your bonus day.
