New skis [east coast, Scott The Ski vs Kastle FX85]

I am interested in purchasing new skis for next year. Advanced East Coast skier. Only 135 pounds 5'3" (male). Primarily ski bumps and trees….only groomers when necessary. On groomed trails I tend to stay on the sides were the snow is rather than zooming down. I have it narrowed down between two skis. I will not be able to demo either one. Any information you would be kind enough to offer would be greatly appreciated. Scott The Ski or Kastle FX85 (nonmetal). Also, length recommendation would be great. Thanks so much for your time.

I demoed the Scott on mixed (semi-ugly) early season conditions, but haven't tried the FX85. I own the FX84, but from what I've read (SegBrown reviewed it on Pugski — where she's SBrown) the 85 is a somewhat different ski.

I didn't care much for the Scott, though many people love it. I demoed Rossi's E88 that day and liked it a lot more. The only ski I liked better was the Enforcer, which I later bought.

Naturally, I'm biased toward the FX85, because I really like my 84s, and if you like trees and bumps . . .  For me, the Scotts didn't have that smooth, compliant, unflappable ride.  (People will argue with me, though, I'm sure.)

I do think you should demo, though.  Where do you ski?  Okemo has a demo day coming up, and I think Scott is scheduled to be there. The Boot Pro in Ludlow demos Kästles for, I think, $35 / day (they may be at the demo day, but that's not certain).

Both nice skis but different. At your size, and for what your want to do with them, bumps and trees, I'd say The Ski. If you were a bit more groomer and speed oriented, I'd say the FX85. 170 in The Ski, 173 (or whatever the new length is) in the FX. Both have early rise front and back, so the actual running surface is well less than the length indicates.

Thank you so much for the replies! It is such a tough choice. I always try to demo a ski before I buy it. I do not think it is going to happen for either of these two. I hear nothing but great things about both and do not want to make the incorrect choice. Thanks again!
