Condo Sun Peaks location

Thanks for all the advise on my other thread, we are firming up dates and when we are in each location but I'm having trouble trying to work out the 'best' ski in and ski out location at Sun Peaks by looking at the maps.  It looks very spread out and lots of places appear to be so far away from the town centre when we are used to Copper Mountain.

We are currently looking on vrbo and owner direct to try to find something initially.  I know Cahilty isn't available on the dates we are looking.

Thanks in advance :)

While Sun Peaks has a lot of ski-able terrain (4270 acres) the actual village (7,500 beds) is quite compact with a ski-way right through the main part of the village core, making all 7 hotels "ski-in-out" or a walk across the road and put your skis on and ski to a lift.

Just about all the hotel rooms have kitchenettes except for the Sun Peaks Grand but it has an annex called the Residences and they are all 1 or 2 bedroom apartments with a full kitchen/living room open plan.

The Sundance hotel is about 100 feet from the Sundance Chairlift.

In addition, Snow Creek condos are ski-in-out.

Kookaburra lodge is walk across the road to put skis on and ski to the lifts and is apartments, I think.

Burfield Heights condos are ski-in-out to the Burfield Chair but about 2 miles from the village. The International Hostel is walk across the street to the Burfield Chair. Homes on Burfield drive are a short walk to the Burfield chair.

Homes on Sunburst drive are mostly ski-in-out or a short walk to put skis on but are a bit of a walk to the Village for shopping or dining after the lifts close.

There are also condos and town homes near the Morrisey Chair that are ski-in-out but I do not know the names of the lodges over there.

Sun Peaks is having an outstanding snow year with a reported alpine base of 227cm (89in), mid mountain base is 207cm (81in) and the height of the snow pack for the year usually doesn't occur until mid March. Some years they don't even get to a 200cm base.

hope this helps.

Thanks DanoT every view of the maps seems to rotate and it is hard to judge. Just waiting on a reply from a McGillvary condo and there are a couple in the complex above the pub that look like they may fit us and are hopefully available. We keep finding of course many families haven't planned their own holiday so are hesitant to rent yet. Airfares booked last night to Kalowna so it really is all happening:)

Ah, the closest airport is Kamloops, not Kelowna. I would estimate the drive from Kelowna to SPs to be about 3 hours.

Might want to change your flights (or change resorts).

From Kelowna, the closest international airport, the options are: a shuttle bus to SP which might be quite costly, or a rental car, or a connector flight to Kamloops and shuttle or rent a car to get to SP, about 45 minutes from Kamloops.

The advantage of a rental car is that it would allow the OP to stay at a ski-in-out accommodation at the Burfield base or Morrisey base and still have access to the shops in the village after the lifts close.

If the OP stays within walking distance to the village core, then a rental car is not needed.

I made it from motel 5 miles N of Kelowna to Sun Peaks in 2:15. While I was using a radar detector and roads were clear, I was not going faster than some others. Roads are 2-lane and mostly flat except for long downhill into Kamloops and then climb to Sun Peaks, where a Toyota slowed down a long line of vehicles until we could pass.

On my mountain tour their were a couple of people staying in 'ski-in' condo that they said was a long way from Sun Peaks base, probably off Mt Morrisey Connector or East Village Ski Way. See http://www.firsttracksonline.com/boards/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=12058 for trip report.

or just fly direct to Vancouver rent a car there and drive.  Easy 4.5 hour drive.

That extra time you'll spend for waiting for a connecting a flight to either Kamloops of Kelowna will probably be as much as the drive unless your very lucky on connections and then you still need to get the the resort from either anyway.

I doubt there are any direct non-stop flights from NZ to anywhere in B.C. other than Vancouver but I could be wrong

Thanks Jo but we are spending a bit of time at Big White First hence flying into Kalowna.  We will have a car and did think seriously about driving from Vancouver but the thought of a closed road and spending many hours in the car stuck with the kids needing to go bathroom, hungry etc made me a little stressed.  Also we anticipate having to drive into Kalowna at least once during our stay to refill the groceries and trying to carry food for 7 people and a visit to Cosco will be a lot easier with a car.  We aren't sure where we are staying yet at Sun Peaks we are waiting to hear back from a couple of Condos.  We would like to be quite central so we can really ski in and out easily.
