Mogul ski edge sharpening technique

Thread Starter

Hi.  I am beginning a journey to maintaining my own skis so I can control the tuning.  My question is after you sharpen the edges, you would use a gummy to dull the edges at the tip and tail.  For mogul skiing, how far should I go with the dulling?  Any other suggestions about tuning for mogul skiing?

That depends entirely on your personal style of skiing.  Some don't detune at all, some do. If want the skis to carve well on groomers as well go very lightly if at all.  Also depends on the skis and sidecut.. The straighter the ski, the more most would detune it.  Bring a stone with you and take a run or two, detune a little if the skis are too grabby for you, rinse and repeat.

What tools do you have to ensure your bases are flat before you sharpen the edges ?

I use the ski visions base flattening tools. They need to have a fairly flat base to set the correct edge angles with your file and moonflex diamond stones.

I don't detune at all, since my bump skis are my piste skis and I want them as sharp as possible for hard groomers.
