It's all good advice, wrong way not taken.
For Nastar I would lean toward ex-race skis as you suggest. What about Fischer RC4 World Cups with the half moon's cut out of the tails?
One problem with coat racking my Olins is that I really enjoy carving on them. I also added them to my quiver as a milestone in ski design: A 190cm shaped recreational ski; the end of the line for that style for sure, gone for good. So I have a pair, and they carve, through any condition. Plus they are a tribute to the Olin brand- an old favorite of mine!
My approach to the shaped ski generation was slow yet I knew all along that skiing on them would be better. Obviously it is not just the side cut shape but the torsional stiffness that sets the modern skis apart form those straight wet noodles we grew up on. I have walked into ski shops to see new trends almost annually ever since the first day I began skiing. Back then all black Olin Mark l's lined the wall! So over time mostly in the last 10 years or so I picked up some of my favorite shaped skis and milestones; purchasing them years after they were new and expensive.
The Salomon 1080, when new, were a milestone. Yet I understand your impression of mine. Frankly I was a little disappointed in their color when I un-boxed them as an ebay purchase; yet they have a cool pearl metallic finish and textured top sheet. I bid on a photo that showed them as a silver finish because of the lighting I guess. Meanwhile; long before every ladies ski had a rounded and turned up tail- the Salomon 1080 was developed, as you probably know, to take freestyle skiing (or "Free" skiing) into the Snowboard Half Pipe and onto the snowboard terrain parks. The rest is history. I find mine to be special because that year Salomon included this Vincent Dorian edition plus some cool Look heels designed to withstand radical aerial landings. Vincent Dorian is mentioned in the article below check it out.
(Video about 2014 Freestyle skiers preparing for the Olympics is kind of long)
PS: I earned a good ranking and Qualified for the NASTAR Nationals on my 169cm 1080's! (2008-09 Season). Couldn't make the trip though.
