HELP WANTED--Moderators Needed

Hello EpicSki community,

With nearly twenty years of being online the make-up of EpicSki is ever changing. EpicSki is as large as it's ever been and that means we need moderators to help curate and keep the peace in the community. For a while we had a new moderator close to every years, but now it's been quite a long time since we've had any new moderators. I've been serving as a moderator for 5.5 years and I'm the second most recently appointed of the moderators behind @marznc who started 3 years ago.

We've had several moderators depart for all manner of reasons from health issues to work and family commitments over the past few years, but we've not replaced any of them. As a result we're looking for volunteers to help us with moderating the website. Overall the community here does a good job at being civil which generally makes the job of moderator easy compared to other forums, but we do need a little help.

What we primarily need are eyeballs. Sometimes problems arise on the site because none of the existing moderators see a problem brewing before it blows up. Having a moderator step in and just post a reminder to keep things civil goes a long way at mitigating potential disputes. Likewise having someone who sees something starting temporarily lock a thread is also a good way to keep things from escalating.

Last year we were bombarded with SPAM; we've implemented some more tools that seem to be helping us avoid getting flooded with SPAM posts, but we do get the occasional drive by spam attack that we need someone to help clean up too. We're not asking for a huge time commitment, just to volunteer some of the time you already spend here on EpicSki to help us out with the day to day operations of the site. If you are interested please send me a PM so we can discuss things further.

Thanks!

Tyler

You know who would be good at this? @Trekchick and @Philpug. Check with them.

What was it Groucho said about not wanting to be part of any club that would have him? smile.gif

I'll be happy to continue superflagging anything I see that is WAY over the line even to me,but I'm hardly the example of "moderation" or unbiased about things people disagree about regularly here and prefer to be able to push the limits of discussion more than a moderator should.

I do moderate a skateboard forum and admin a pretty large facebook group, but those are a bit more raucous than what is allowed here.

I wouldn't enjoy the site nearly as much if I had to behave at moderator level mellow.

I have already been in that rodeo, and I'm officially retired.  I still think drafting you was a good idea.  Good luck Tyler.

Hey @Bob Lee,  I could use a refill.

Josh Matta may have some free time.

I'm with @crgildart. I don't want to behave more than I have to.

Yeah, I thought of applying too, but I think the superflag powers are enough.

Thankless job it is.

As a for profit entity they should pay for the job.

I am still a newby but will report anything in the retro threads I follow yet it's pretty civil in that department.
People who like old school stuff.....
Generally are kind of the pre-hater generation!
I just have to police my own posts...
Like talking about motorcycles in a ski forum!

One or two OTS people do post on here from time to time, but they're too busy with other things to be involved in moderating here.

You can put the tin-foil hat away, no one has been asked to resign or any other conspiracy theory. I was going to announce it tomorrow, but with some new help coming in Epic has decided to retire from moderating after many years on the job.

And you can put away your tin foil hat detector tin foil hat.  I was merely pointing out that I just noticed the change.  Never accused or insinuated anything at all about why and just was asking a question.

Guess I'm just a little paranoid after how every announcement thread I've had to make in the last few months has gone. :D;)

Just thinking out loud, but, several months ago, those that ran the forum would have pulled new mods in without the need for advertising the need. Pushing people out who have the ability to pull people in has it's consequences.

Should @epic decide to leave, my thanks to him for many years of service. Some years ago, he helped me find a place at Stowe for ashes from a great friend, then gave me a guided Stowe tour, and, a comp lift ticket. People like that are very hard to find.

You don't know what goes on behind the scenes to make that statement... ;)

Firstly we actually pulled in two new mods by invitation just before I made this posting. Secondly the idea for a public announcement was actually an idea that we've discussed doing for the last two or three years, but ended up reaching out directly to a couple people instead. The problem with that was that we don't know everyone's circumstances. Over the past few years we have pulled people in, but they were just that--pulled. They didn't really have a strong desire to help and as a result fizzled out and never did much and aren't moderating anymore. A public posting allows those that are willing to do the work to volunteer and then we vet their posting history to decide whether to accept them or not.

So that's why you didn't ask me... ;-)
