Even before I used that, I used an old iron that was made before the steam irons. It had no holes like this one. I had an Al stand made with a small hole for a thermocouple so I could see how hot the iron was. You can see the stand on the far corner of the table. It has a 3/16 silicone mat on the bottom of it.

Many moons ago I too waxed with a home iron.  The no steam type as well.  I followed the no smoke or vapor trails rule.  Now I use a thermometer to make sure what temp. I run with my Toko T-8's as the dial is not accurate at all.  Wax on wax off!  See ya!
