DIA to breckenridge to Aspen - car/bus ??

Thread Starter

I am planning a trip to Breck and Aspen in March. WOuld prefer to rent a car but a) cant seem to get the rental companies to

guarantee me a AWD or 4WD. They say they can note the preference bu not guarantee.

1. Would like to hear from others that have rented an SUV from DIA (or denver downtown) . Is there one company from which I have

a better chance of getting a AWD/4WD

2. Alternatively CME can get me to Breckenridge. but they wont take me to Aspen. Other than Greyhound - are there any other shuttles that can take me to Aspen.

Thanks

Marty

From DIA, you can take shuttles or private transportation from CME Premier to Breckenridge, Keystone, Frisco, Silverthorne, Copper Mountain, Vail, Beaver Creek, Avon, Edwards, Eagle, Glenwood Springs, Carbondale, Basalt, Snowmass Village, and Aspen

CME goes to Aspen, but I think from Breck,  you need to book it back to Dillon and then on to Aspen.

But I would rent a car.   If you must have 4wd, try some of the agencies that let you pick a class out of an isle like National.

I drive it all the time in Econo/compact.

In almost all cases, if you rent an SUV, it will be AWD.  That said, you will pay dearly for that option.  It's not uncommon for an SUV to cost 4 times what a car will out of DIA in the winter.  In most cases a FWD car will be OK for a trip on I70 in all but the middle of a storm.

I drove from DIA to Aspen/Snowmass in the latest storm (Sat Jan 31 / 40 inches total) in a Front-wheel drive Toyota Camry with all season tires.  It would have been nice to have snow tires, but the car did fine.  Unless your accommodations are up some steep road you don't need 4WD/AWD.

My $.02

Only issue with renting a FWD car is if the traction law goes into effect for passenger cars, which it did during the storm last week.  If it does the average FWD rental out of DIA would be in violation.

Generally you don't need a car in Aspen and depending on how long you are staying, it maybe cheaper to get two one way rentals.
This weekend rates are high. I got reservations for $103 up and $38 back. Mo better than CME.
