Looks like his outside ski washed out

It's not about the skis, it is about keeping the pressure on them.

Looked to me like he couldn't see the snow and missed the small dip and was out of balance (forward and already bottomed out) at the compression. Pretty much the same for all three.

Looked like the outside ski slipped and when he was about to recover on the inside he ran into the compression.

There's a thread on this: http://www.epicski.com/t/62521/world-cup-champ-aksel-lund-svindal-out-for-months.

I've never seen a ski come apart like that. Amazing.

Edit: There's a good thread on Pugski, too.

Not the same crash. That thread was about his terrible accident in Beaver Creak

Thanks — I wondered, since he seemed to be walking away.

What I found interesting is this is the same spot Hannes Reichelt crashed as well.  Its clear that Svindal was in bad shape before he hit the spot that wrecked him but he might have recovered.  Below is Reichelt's crash.  He clearly skis over something that kicks him into the back seat and then he crashes.  it appears Svindal skis over the same spot and also jerks him backwards before the crash.

He came under the Redbull sign and got in the back seat slightly while in mid-air. When he hit the ground he further in the back seat, wasn't in control of the front of his skis, got some ski wobble and couldn't recover before hitting the compression and  blew up.

Here's the winner. Looks like he dips his tips and catches a lot less air. Sheds some speed after landing to get ready for the turn.
