This has to be one of the best Christmas Holiday weeks that Schweitzer Mountain Resort, has experienced in decades. This turned out to be the perfect storm as solid dumpage kept hitting the resort on a daily basis leading up to Christmas Eve day setting Schweitzer up for what could go down in history as the best Christmas Holidays' conditions ever on the mountain. In my 40 years of skiing here, I don't remember conditions this good, no matter what time of the season! The cold temps throughout the week kept this snow in perfect conditions. Word on the street, while most of us were doing our last minute shopping on Christmas Eve day that the skiing at the resort was Heli Ski good!
Each day throughout the holiday break the resort was getting some broken sun as the lake fog moved it's way up from the Lake Pend Orielle and the Valley below. This was just enough to tease us. But when the forecasters called for Bluebird skies above 3500 feet with low valley fog for New years Eve day, I figured this was the perfect time to test out a new camera gadget called the Gimbal for my GoPro. The Gimbal takes away all the bumps and jerkiness when using a GoPro or any camera while moving.
Our crew of practice dummies (I told them they were models) consisted of Tommy Letourneau, Mike Altringer and JoJo and CK Letourneau yo-yo'd laps of the LakeView triple taking full advantage of the sun and the impressive Sun Dogs making their presence. We hit up the steeps of Buds Chutes and Jacks Dream for about an hour and sampled some sweet groomers.
If you've ever considered hitting Schweitzer mountain Resort, NOW'S THE TIME!
Remember that I am moving with the skiers and you'll see in this short video there is minimal jerkiness in these shots, I'm pretty impressed with how the gimbal worked. All this is shot entirely with a GoPro. Let me know what you think.
