Powder based all mountain ski? - Page 4

I just saw this thread now - and I was surprised that no one recommended women's skis. You're tall - but really light, and clearly like skis with torsional stiffness that will be more versatile and responsive. There are some rocking women's skis out there for western snow that would have fit the bill perfectly for you. I know there's stigma about a guy skiing on women's skis, but women's skis charge and would be a great option with some of your stats and preferences. There are a number of awesome previous seasons' women's skis for under $300 on ebay etc. For you, I would have recommended something like the Nordica Wildfire (in 177 or 185), or the Nordica La Nina (in a 177 or 185). Charging, playful women's skis yet can get you down a groomer when you need it (and it would be fun!). I think you could have picked up a pair of 185 Wildfires for like $175. Slap on some bindings and you're set.

He's 16.  I remember what highschool was like.  I'm not going to recommend a woman's ski to a guy in HS.

A 185 JJ will do quite nicely in the trees.  If you want something with a little more heft and a little less turn, look at the Blizzard Scout.  Lighter, no-metal version of the Cochise.  185 would be a good length for someone your height/weight.

Except that a lot of men's and women's skis are exactly the same, just with different top sheets. And many of the top sheets are no longer gender – specific. The last version of the wildfire was beige or gray and green. Also – don't you think that's the wrong message to send to an aspiring skier @Caucasian Asian ? I am of the opinion that the advice one should give is to find the best ski possible for that individual - many women ski men's skis, and yes, I know men who also ski women's skis.

Thanks for the idea of the woman's ski. I understand they may be identical or very similar except for top sheets but I just couldn't be seen on some ski with a name like La Niña or with little flowers as graphics.

I skied my new 188 soul 7's that I ended up on for closing day of snowbasin. They truly impresse me on the groomed runs i was stuck with. Made me consider sellin my other skis and running a one ski quiver out of the soul's. No fresh powder to be found though. Cant wait till next season.

I'm not going to belabour the point...but the skis have neither flowers, nor the name printed on them....I think, thankfully, the days of flowery skis are over.

Congratulations!  Great choice!  Almost as much float as the Super 7, and more versatile.   To me, works on everything but ice and really rough conditions.

Happy skiing!
