The trip will be during the second week of March and we will only have three days to ski. I've been racking my brain trying to figure out the best mountain(s) to go to in order to satisfy everyone but with only 3 days to ski, I have to narrow it down to Squaw and Heavenly.
Now here are my considerations:
We're NE skiers. My wife and kids have never skied out West. I've been to CO and UT. Me- Advanced, her - Advanced Intermediate, kids - darn good little skiers for only skiing 2 years. They've been to Hunter, Windham, Belleayre, Kton, Gore, and Whiteface. I've taken them down groomed blacks, some bumps and even in a ton of trees at Gore. Still in all, they're young (8 and 10) and inexperienced.
Biggest thing for me is I want to WOW them on their first Western trip. I want them to see what alpine terrain really looks like, take a look at some of the extreme terrain that is available to experts, etc. Squaw...
Heavenly seems to be more of an intermediate mountain with of course great views and probably will be easier to just explore as a family (I'm aware of the traversing). Also staying in South Lake Tahoe seems like it might be more fun for night time activities.
Not sure we'll make it back to Tahoe anytime soon after that so I really want to ski the big two resorts.
We're skiing 3 of 4 days. My initial plan is to stay near Heavenly and ski Friday at Heavenly, take Saturday off, Ski Sunday at Heavenly, and check out Squaw on Monday. Of course conditions will dictate which days we'll ski but trying to avoid crowds as much as possible.
Any advice is very much appreciated.
