What is the weirdest conversation you've ever had on a chairlift?

The title says it all, what is the weirdest or most awkward conversation you've ever had to endure on the ride up the mountain?

Dunno if it's weird really..I was on a gondola once with a guy who had 100' of yellow nylon rope in his pack.  The intent was, if the gondola ever got stuck, he was going to slide down. That just struck me as odd and possibly suicidal...  :dunno

(If he made it I'd probably be next in line..can't stand being stuck..)

Have had a few weird ones and a few I wish I could have just walked away from:

- Probably my best lift conversation but with a little weirdness mixed in: local noticed how scratched to hell my board was and mentioned he had some boards he was selling. Ended up buying a board and bindings from him and got a great price on brand new old stock from a couple seasons earlier. The weird part was that he was a photographer by trade and was telling me how he took photos of randy divorcees for adult hook-up sites and often tag-teamed the gals with his gf - a little bit TMI for a casual lift ride chat.

- Guy at Steamboat that was bragging about how he "rides the s#*t out of this mountain," telling me all about his vertical stats and such. I was very impressed :rolleyes

- A bunch of middle-aged jerks at Snowbasin tried to block me out and get the entire gondola to themselves, as if they were teenagers trying to smoke up. I pushed my way in and they started drinking on the ride up, which I assume is why they wanted a private car, being Utah and all. The two women and the two guys were drinking Budweiser margaritas, so I had a good time suggesting that the reason they didn't want me on is because the guys were embarrassed to be drinking cheap-ass lady coolers in public.

Rode the old, replaced by gondola, double chair from Killington base lodge to the top with a local condo owner.  He was in his 50's I was maybe 25 and he asked me how I liked big K.  I was honest, it ain't my favorite and, especially back then it seemed to me to be very over-hyped. He was so upset over my opinions that he forgot to lift his poles as we passed the midstation and the ends of both just snapped right off.  I think the rest of the ride passed in uncomfortable silence.

LOL ... when EpicSki bickering goes real life.

Epicski in real life isn't always as fun as on the interwebz:

Once rode the chair with an Epicski member and we were having a nice chat.  We came off and a second Epicski member was standing there.

First Epicski member tells second Epicski member to act like a man and say stuff to his face instead of always being negative on the site.

Second Epicski member says "F U, like I'm here to live by your rules" and skis off.

I never did meet second Epicski member in person, but up to that point, I thought it might be interesting.  Guess not. Oh well...

I don't think I've ever had a weird one... I did ride with one guy at Vail who was vaping and trying to kinda, sorta hide it, which made me laugh, since I didn't care and if he had just asked I'd have said to go ahead. Instead, he didn't say a word - which was kind of weird.

Post #3 by @KevinF reminded me of one I had at Cannon a few years back. Three other guys on a quad, one looks at me with a red coat on and thinks maybe I'm ski patrol. His phrasing was "Are you of the law?" which confused me. He then clarified asking if I was either ski patrol or a cop, of which I was neither. They ensued to pull out some joints and smoke 'em the rest of the way up while I tried to avoid a contact high.

"Skiing is not a sport for non-white people" in a gondola. Me and 3 Swiss racists.

I stopped talking, put on a grimace and unleashed six or seven of the best farts of my life. I really had to force the last four, but was totally worth losing that set of underwear.

Riding up KT 22 with 2 other singles. One guy was trying to explain the mountain to the other. Must have been Italian because he had to take off his gloves so he could use his hands to talk.

Road down the funitel with a woman who had lost the basket off a BD Traverse pole. And there I was with the basket end of a traverse pole I had just broken--I gave her the basket.

At Marmot Basin some wacked out weirdo told me that his step daughter had her first period the other day...then his buddy growled and said "ohhh I love that day, because that is the day a girl becomes a woman" I though about jumping off. Then another time at lakè louise 3 dudes we smoking "boat"(pcp) in the gondola I thought I was gonna pass out or something when I got out I was soo dizzy. I just remember all they were saying was "boat boat boat boat boat". Its short for "love boat".

Not weird...kinda cool for me anyway. Was taking a class when out at Breckenridge a few years back. One of the gals in the class introduced with her first name and said she was a stay at home mom. Regular looking, down to earth. I rode with her on one of the trips up and had the usual chit chat. Told me she and her family lived in South of France. I said, "oh yeah?". She says, "Yeah, we live in Monaco". I said, "Oh! Monaco!" She says, "Oh, you know Monaco? Most Americans it seems don't really know much about Europe. I said, "Well, I follow Formula 1, so I know about Monaco from that". She says, "Oh, well maybe you know my husband, Alan McNish" Pretty cool for me. Alan wasn't all that successful in F1, but had a great career in Prototypes and was very successful at LeMans.

I've had a few strange ones. The one that sticks out to me the most is one I had a couple of springs ago on Collins lift at Alta. The guy said early on in the ride that he was from Chicago. As we to where we could see Ballroom, he started wondering aloud why ski patrol had closed the gate to the far side of Ballroom. He said that he was skiing there earlier in the day and was thinking of ducking the rope and going back. I explained that it was because of the rising danger of wet slab avalanches throughout the day. His response to that was "it doesn't look that dangerous." I then pointed him across the canyon to a wet slab slide from a day or two earlier on the south side of Superior. He didn't say much after that.
