Lake Tahoe in April 2016?

Hey everyone, intermediate skier from Colorado here who prefers blue and some black terrain.

I've never been to Tahoe and I'm considering making the trip in 2016. I figure with the El Nino year and owning the Epic Local pass (Heavenly and Northstar access) I might as well try out my first California skiing experience.

Unfortunately, flights from January to March don't fit my schedule or budget. So, I'm considering a 3 day outing around April 8-10th or April 15-17th.

I've read that Tahoe usually has good spring conditions. Does anyone know if the abundant El Nino snowfall is expected to continue through the Spring? And just how much risk and I running by planning a trip so close to the estimated closing date this year? (April 17th according to the resort websites)

Thanks.

The effects of a strong el nino haven't taken full effect on the weather pattern yet. That should change by mid jan and with a snowpack that is getting deeper by the day, you should be ok coverage wise by mid april , but obviously weather is fickle and that can change quickly. Can you ski kirkwood on your epic pass? if so, that might be your best bet.

Kirkwood is included, forgot to mention that in the original post. Our buddy has a place almost at the base of Northstar, so Northstar and Heavenly would be prioritized due to transportation factors, although I guess Kirkwood isn't completely out of the question.

Well, Heavenly just got 3 feet (along with most of the West, it appears), so if El Nino not to full effect I am getting VERY excited!!

As for your trip, are you certain that Southwest didn't have decent flight options?  We just booked a late Feb trip to fly through Reno from RDU but stopping in Denver on way out and back. They still had cheap fares a few days ago, might be worth another look.

As noted by powderpanda weather is a fickle beast, but on a good snow year Tahoe does generally keep a good covering late into the Spring. There should be plenty of snow cover for the Intermediate type runs you appear to be after.

My recollection of late spring skiing there was that high winds were the biggest obstacle to Heavenly -- the mountain basically shuts down with high winds which can be common, but like the weather, no way to predict at this date.

So, 30+ inches last weekend, another 25+ more this weekend.  I would think Squaw will be pretty great in late April.  Any thoughts?  I'm debating whether to go in Mid April or last week of April when kids are off school.  Is late April typically sunny corn snow or rainy?

You can not predict the weather this far in advance.  However, the odds of having sunny days and skiing spring corn is very good that time of year.  There may be a couple bad days here and there, but if you go for a week you will usually get some good corn.

You may want to check the closing dates of the resorts if you are looking at the last week of April.

Squaw should be officially open to at least mid may and with this season being so amazing, possibly much longer.  I'm from the east coast and with this year, probably many mountains will be closed by early april.  Spring can be foggy, soaking rain here.

I spoke with customer service at Squaw and they said they should be open till May.  I booked a trip for the last week of April.  Hope it stays good!

You need to be careful.  When they say they will be open until May, this might be Weekends only.

On website they only state April 26th, which is when you can be sure they'll be open weekdays.
