Snowbasin in March

Thread Starter

I've been fortunate enough to have been able to ski the LCC/BCC amd Wasatch Back areas now for three years in a row - with great conditions each time, even last season. The downside is to that is because the skiing was so good, I neglected to get up to Snowbasin (or Powder Mtn). Hope to remedy that this year but won't get there until early March and have a couple of questions for regulars.

With Snowbasin on the lee side of the range and slightly lower in elevation than the Wasatch Back areas, are conditions generally the same in March as at PCMR & DV? Or does Snowbasin's greater average snowfall generally provide for better conditions in March than at its southern Wasatch cousins?

I know that nearby lodging options are limited and am OK with staying in/near Ogden (I'll have a rental car). Any suggestions? Also, can I pick up discounted lift tickets at local ski shops in Ogden as I would for the SLC/PC ski areas? Any suggestions?

I have skied Snowbasin several times in mid to late March and enjoyed it.

The primary drawback is that its primary exposure is East, which combined with the altitude, results in more Spring type conditons than LCC or BCC.

I've skied Snowbasin many times on my normal weekend after Presidents Day SLC trip.

Of course, if there is a good storm while you are there, it won't matter what month it is.  But I do know that a few times I've made the mistake of going to  Snowbasin on a powder day and later found LCC had twice the dump!

The bottom of the mtn will be starting a good melt w/ bare patches seen off the slopes.  You will feel spring strongly at the bottom of the Strawberry gondola.

Saying that.  I enjoy a day at Snowbasin and almost always hit is on a trip.  Don't miss it.

I'm completely biased, but if it's over 6 in or so, I'll take Snowbasin with half the snow over LCC. Something to be said about lapping John Paul or Strawberry versus waiting in the Tram line for 45 minutes. And so long as there's powder ...

I wouldn't be all that sure about spring conditions in early March. It could go either way, but what you're describing sounds more reliable for late March/early April. Of course, last year, it could have described mid-February.

Snowbasin is still a good bet in early March, and since you'll have a rental car, you could always hit LCC if it's much better. If no one's getting hit with new snow, Snowbasin's groomers make it a great option. Biased again, but Ogden is a good place to stay compared to Sandy/Midvale.
