SO FAR THIS THREAD IS SO FULL OF BS IT MAKES MY HEAD HURT!
TOG, OLDSCHOOL AND JACQUES KNOW WHAT THERE TALKING ABOUT!
CLINK83...WTF ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?????? Of course base bevel cna make your tips and tails
AND MR. 0/0 BASE BEVEL DUDE. AS TOG SO ADEPTLY POINTED OUT!
YOU SIR ARE BEING DUPED! IF YOU HAVE NOT MEASURED YOUR SKIS YOUR SELF, YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE TUNE IS. I sincerely doubt unless you are World Cup Level Skier that you are skiing a 0 base bevel or skiing with any finesse for that matter! . And base bevel DOES NOT DETERMINE HOW GRIPPY YOUR SKIS ARE ANYWAY.....THE SIDE EDGE ANGLE DOES. SO A 0/4 WOULD BE A HELL OF A LOT GRIPPIER THAN A 0/0. So you are confused on all counts!.
Now the reason ski come out of the shop and are erratic is simply a hanging burr is left on the side edge. It is the main reason i became a tuning expert.
It is really extremely simple. and has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH SOME COCKAMAMY TEMPERATURE THEORY!
a smal burr of metal is created when filing the side edges either by machine or by hand...it does not matter. This burr sticks down into the snow lower than the base edge metal and because your skis need some leeway (even just a tiny bit) to slide sideways even when carving cleanly it needs to be removed, as it will not break off while skiing. It is like having little tiny imoveable rudders the length of your edges, but plays the most havoc in the tip and tail (but trust me you won't like it under foot either)
So simply take an Arkansas Stone (I like True Surgical Stone) , skis, side edge up, base away from you. place the stone it FLAT against the base edge metal and with medium pressure make a couple of passes down the base edge. You will be able to hear the smoothness as the burr is being knocked down.
This is the step apparently most often forgetten or just not in the knowledge base of many tuning shops. Or some low paid ingnoramus is doing your boards along with the other 100 pair that day and is in a hurry or knows no better.
