Likely about 6-8 of us, many with mid-Atlantic origins, will be at Alta on Sat, Apr 2 and Snowbird on Sun, Apr 3. Hoping to tailgate/grilling for lunch and après ski on by-pass road at Snowbird on Apr 3 (locals bring lawn chairs). May try to tailgate at Alta too on the 2nd, perhaps near Albion Day Lodge (open to better Alta location)? Some folks may be at those mtns on Mar 31 and Apr 1 too. Might be at Solitude on Apr 4?

Cool!  Maybe I'll start a separate meetup thread for March 30-April 3 for LCC.

My impression is that tailgating is more common in the far corner of the Wildcat lot than in at Albion.  That's mostly from reading First Tracks TRs for late season.  Easier access to GMD, Collins, and lifts for advanced terrain in general.

marzNC kindly directed me this way. I'll be in the Cottonwoods on Sun and Monday (4/3 and 4/4). Fellow Mid-Atlantic skier. I recognize some of your names from DCSki (lurker alert ;)). I have work in NV later in the week, but the conditions in UT (vs Tahoe) appear worth the detour, en route. Staying in Midvale. Unsure of plans yet...at least one day at Alta (reminiscing from the 90s on some ancient tech).  Howdy!

Cheers,

Tim

Flying into SLC tomorrow night and will be at Alta 6th through 9th (inclusive).   This will be my third trip to Alta but my first flying solo.  Usually ski with my husband (expert) so I am mildly apprehensive about this.  Strong to advanced intermediate - I can get down most things but it's not always pretty....

Plan is to spend as much time as possible off the groomers.

Based in the North East

Welcome to EpicSki!  Whether or not going off the groomers makes sense will depend on the weather.  Wasn't a good idea this morning before things warmed up mid-morning.  I'm with a bunch of friends this week who range from intermediate to advanced who are all what I call "social skiers."  Look for a PM for ideas on how to meet up once you are at Alta.  By the way, I'm an older woman who became an advanced skier in recent years.  Spending a lot of time at Alta in late season is one way I got the mileage needed to become more comfortable off-piste.

You should also consider the All Mountain Adult Workshop, which is 2.5 hours in the afternoon with an instructor as a guide.  Not a lesson, but can ask for tips.  The instructor I work with for semi-private lessons was taking around a woman this afternoon as a solo participant.  They break up people by ability.  Like all group lessons by Alta Ski School, no reservations required.

Today at Alta (probably Snowbird, Solitude, Brighton too) was a groomer day.  Everything froze solid last night.  There was a little fun to be had off Supreme.  Wind gusts at the top of Collins were at 40 MPH around lunch time.  Mineral Basin closed.  Better after lunch when the sun was out.  Fun off Supreme, but still very slick on the Collins side as my friends and I headed back to Alta Lodge around 3:30.  Going off a groomer was really not a good idea.  Apparently going to warm up, maybe too much on Thu & Fri, then possibility of a snowstorm early next week.  Typical spring weather in LCC.

I look at the weather recordings on the Alta website to get true readings for the mountain.

Not sure where you got that, but I found on http://www.snowbird.com/specials/springstayski/  that "The Aerial Tram will be closed for scheduled maintenance from April 18 and June 17. After April 25, Peruvian Gulch will be closed. During this time, skiers/snowboarders will continue to have access to the terrain in Gad Valley and Mineral Basin, conditions permitting. More information at snowbird.com/tramcables."  Note that they are replacing 45 year-old cables on tram and that linked page says "The Aerial Tram and Peruvian Express will be slated for closure on April 18, 2016." So maybe lift will close April 18, but terrain will not close until a week or they have conflicting information on their website. I would not expect tunnel to be open without lift being open.

While I could still make it to Altabird to use my MCP days this season, I don't have any dates scheduled and it will not be for Demo Day.

The comment at the Peruvian Tunnel was mine.  Not the same as the Peruvian lift.  The only reason I'm guessing that the Tunnel would close earlier than April 18 is because that's what happened a few years ago.  I'd taken my tween daughter over to Snowbird to do the Tunnel a day or two after Supreme closed.  The Tunnel was closed.  She did get to ride the Tram for the first time though.

Peter and I arrive tomorrow! We would love to ski with other adventurous intermediates. This means we like to go in and out of wood runs, try steep groomed blacks , and play in the smaller freestyle parks....overall, we just want to have fun. Form is secondary in our camp.

Please contact me [via PM] if want to ski together.
