I'm coming to the experts for a bit of advice regarding boots. I live in Colorado and went to the shop I've used for years to try on a Lange RX 130 LV in 25.5. My previous boot is a 2008 Lange Freeride 130 (old RL 11 shell) in a 25. Yes I realize there are no half sizes, but the old Lange shell was a 292mm with small toe box and new one is 296mm with an awesome toe box.
My feet measure 251mm left and 249mm right. I have a skinny little ankles and heel, medium high instep and a average (wider proportionally forefoot). Langes have always had the best heel pocket for me but the toe box always required tons of work to be live able. My current boot has been grinded several times and I'm still not super comfy. Skiing is fine but now I've got kiddos on hill with me and my toes are done after an hr with them due to not charging and weighting the front of the boot every second if that makes sense.
My goal is a boot with the response I currently enjoy but with a bit more comfort for when I'm with my kids or hiking Highlands Bowl.
I have tried on a RX 130 LV in 25.5 and an RS 130 in 24.5. The shell fit was around 18-19mm in 25.5 and 9-10mm in 24.5.
The boots fit extremely well but I'm not sure which way to go for the increased comfort without sacrificing most of the performance.
From the experience of you guys here, have most people been able to downsize in the newer Lange shell compared to the old RL 11? The 25.5 felt perfect, but I'm concerned its a bit too long and when packed out will
Be sloppy, but the thought of full feeling in my toes is tempting!
Also, the RS 130 is readily available in 24.5 but I can't find the RX 130 LV in that size anywhere. My shop tells me the liner in the RX is a bit warmer than RS and that's also appealing. The shop fitter has basically told me I'm right on the edge either way and can upsize for comfort or downsize for performance. I like the shop but have to admit they don't cater to the more aggressive crowd and normally deal with weeked warriors. I'm not tommy moe but I chase my wife who's an ex Racer and on a good year I'm a 75 day guy. I'll give up 5 percent of my current performance for comfort but that's about all I want to sacrifice.
Is it possible to have my cake and eat it too? Is the 24.5 with a little work going to be more comfortable in the toe box than my current set?
Thanks for any advice guys. And for the record, I like my shop and will be buying from them, but the collective here has a bit more experience with a more dedicated skier than the average weekender and that's why I've come here, in addition to the fact that no one here is trying to directly sell me something.....at least until the next blem sale
