Sierra at Tahoe - vs- Kirkwood

We are going for the first time this weekend to sierra at Tahoe.  The conditions look great.  Anyone have a tip about discount passes?

We usually ski at Sierra because we stay in Placerville.  We combine skiing with wine tasting and music for a fun weekend.  Here an the itinerary from the Bay Area that works for us.

Hope to have some nice pictures by Monday.  See you on the slopes.

We are considering the longer drive to Kirkwood for the next trip.  Is it worth the longer drive with conditions so good this year?

If you already have another trip planned out and no season-pass obligations or anything, just go to both!

Yes, I know living in Idaho doesn't qualify me to answer you?  Basically learned to ski at Sierra Ski Ranch and have skied there a lot and have skied Kirkwood probably 30 times.  It is always fun to go to a new resort and Kirkwood has a lot of skiing, from good intermediate runs to On Man Chute that is so narrow you can't turn in the middle, it isn't wide enough.   Always enjoyed both resorts, Kirkwood is more wide open in places.  Is it worth the drive, yes at least once and then you can decide for the future.  Have fun, Tahoe is looking good for snow this year.

Kirkwood is more open bowls, chutes and steeps than Sierra. Higher elevation also means a little drier snow. Wind can be an issue.

OP: You may have inferred this, but Sierra Ski Ranch is the former name of Sierra at Tahoe.

This weekend's Reno NWS forecast is looking like flat light goggle days maybe with some lingering snow showers.   As such SAT will be a  better choice for visibility because all its runs are bordered with tall fir/pine forest that helps absorb the blue light wavelengths allowing more definition to slope features.  KW on the other hand has much more open terrain with few trees especially higher up on its ridge lines.  Select a nice sunny light wind weekend for your future KW trip.

YEP, Boothcreek ski holdings bought Sierra Ski Ranch years ago and renamed to Sierra at Tahoe,  same Corp. that owns Northstar amongst other resorts.

Well . . . . Booth Creek DID own Northstar, but sold it to Vail Resorts 6-8 years ago. And to confuse matters, Booth Creek, whose only holding, in addition to Northstar, has ever been Sierra at Tahoe, is located in Vail. I believe their execs are also ex-Vail Resorts execs.
