Big Sky Outlook - christmas week

Appreciate any details on conditions at Big Sky. Will be there in just over 10 days. Was hoping for more out of the storm that just rolled through - forecast said 10 - 20, and they ended up with 11...

Seems like about one third of the trails are open - but in some cases adjacent trails that would seem to have roughly same aspect are closed. Example - Tippy's tumble is open, Ambush is closed - both blue, generally the same exposure. Just wondering if they are "holding back" because it's early season and low demand?

Any clues on when/how close they are to opening the tram? Thanks!

Big Sky is "holding back" operating lifts because of early season, but roped trails are likely because the cover is thin.  The snow is very powdery which is great but doesn't cover rocks and stumps very well.  The mountain is skiing well and collecting snow nightly.

Unless there is a heavy snow fall skiing off of the tram may not be open Xmas week.

Another foot of snow has fallen in the past two days at Big Sky and more is on the way.  Certainly the mountain has a conditions page to see conditions, but there is also a weather station on Andesite that reports snow, wind and temp fairly accurately each hour and is easy to find in most search engines with "Andesite Mountain weather" as the search.

I am in Big Sky now for the next few weeks, so feel free to ask questions.

Talisman.
I heard on the lift a couple days ago, the reason for top of mountain not open off of Tram is they are having trouble with a very weak layer below all of the snow we been getting.
As far as conditions go for Christmas, this is setting up for a great year. It is snowing almost daily and all things point for it to continue thru the New Year. Enjoy
As for Ambush they were still making snow on it. There is a huge amount already there. It will be open soon. Runs being roped I am not really sure why. I got myself in a position where I had to ski a roped run and the conditions were great.

Thanks for the replies. Trail count/acreage has gone up a bunch since my original post - so in line with what you both reported. Taking kids for the first time, may ride the tram even if nothing open just for the view (assume that's what they mean when they list it as open, but add scenic after).

When are you going to be at Big Sky?  My teen daughter is going with another family the week after Christmas.

My first time at Big Sky I took the free mountain host tour.  She said to take poles even when leaving skis at the base of the tram.  I was glad I did.  Skied Liberty later that week, but it was nice to have done the tram ride first without any thought of skiing down.

Good tip on taking poles for the scenic tram ride - thanks. We'll be there that same week.

We've gone to Big Sky the week after Christmas the past two years.  Last year the snow was light in a couple areas but overall everything was in good conditions.  From what I've seen they are getting plenty of snow and I'd expect you'll have good conditions.  If you get a sunny, clear day take the tram.  Our first year we missed out because the only sunny day we had was our first.  We will be heading to Big Sky in March this year so we can go with my in-laws.

I am happy to report that Ambush opened today and Ambush glades are skiing well.  Once the snow pack settles a bit more you should see more terrain expansion at Big Sky.  Rumor is that Sheddy and Dakota will be open tomorrow with skiing off the tram not far behind.
