2016 New England Gathering -- roll call - Page 2

post #31 of 55

I already burned my MCP free days last weekend because I'm not sure what to expect 2 weeks later. But will still get 50% off with my MCP, so as long as condition is decent, I'll head up there. Dates are not yet firm because I have a big deadline at work on that time. So, I maybe in F-S or only S/S.

I love spring skiing. So if we can't have fresh snow, let it be warm on that weekend!

Stowe Yes.  Smuggs, not so sure.  Stowe has the best snowmaking and grooming in the region.  Jay's trails aren;t the best and their snowmaking /grooming ain't great either.  I haven's skied Smuggs enough to know.

It will be a "game week" decision for us.

I heard two rumors from speaking to staff at Stowe over the weekend.  One was that they were shutting down the first weekend in April; the other was that they are holding firm to their commitment of April 24th as "we are confident that snowmaking depths can survive into late April".  Take your pick.  @epic?

Stowe does historically shut down in stages -- they'll shut down Spruce side one week, the gondola the following week and finally the quad.

Regardless of when final closing date is, they have plenty of snow to survive until the gathering, at least on snowmaking trails.  There are still snow whales in strategic locations to patch up any holes that might appear.

As I mentioned above, I'm on injured reserve and won't make it.  If after the Smuggs day on Saturday you decide to re-arrange the schedule to follow the better snow / terrain, feel free to do so.

Also, do Stowe/Smuggs usually have the same conditions as Jay?

Currently the forecast is for some warmth over the next couple days and again next week.  Stowe trails with snowmaking should survive ok...  natural snow terrain is probably not going to be an option.

For those who might not have noticed in the regular gathering discussion thread, I broke my arm over the weekend so I won't be able to attend.  :(  Will those of you who are still planning to attend please update your status with planned dates, etc so that we know who to look for?

@JaneB

@Laurel Hill Crazie

@Snowbowler

@qcanoe

@Max Capacity

I think everybody else put firm dates down above.

Thanks!  I'll miss skiing with you guys.  :(

I am very shaky on the Gathering at this point, given the snow situation. I do have two free Stowe days remaining on my MCP. I won't be showing up for either of the Smuggs days, even if they have snow, which now seems highly unlikely. I think the Stowe days are Friday and Sunday, if the originally published schedule holds up. (Which it might not, if Smuggs closes. Right?) In any case, I MAY end up showing for the Friday Stowe day, or perhaps the Saturday Stowe day if there is a reshuffle. Please do keep me in the loop on any and all out-of-band communications via PM or email. Thanks.

Understood regarding the snow (or lack thereof) situation.  Stowe looks like they took a big hit the past couple days in terms of reduced trail count.  Smuggs looks like they have more advanced terrain left than Stowe does at this point.  Unfortunately, the extended forecast isn't doing any favors.

If participants want to re-organize my proposed schedule in order to take advantage of free MCP days, etc., be my guest.  Given my injured non-participation status, I'm not sure my vote should count for much.  I originally proposed alternating Stowe and Smuggs days so that people didn't have to make the "long drive around" on consecutive days.  But if people would be more inclined to come at this point for "Stowe only" and the group agrees, I won't stand in your way.

My left foot is worse than @KevinF 's shoulder. Eff you @TimGedney, you were right. You are a good man, as long as you stay out of the half pipe. :D

95% I'm out. Not worth the 8-9 hour drive for me for these pitiful conditions. Work situation blowing up, so I'll be doing job search stuff on weekends. Need to pay 2016-17 ski bills.

I'm leaving tons of MCP money on the table, missing Taos and Stowe.

@KevinF, I think my last month has sucked worse than yours. Peace on my man.

You too bro.

Well, if we're sharing details about our injuries....  I was scheduled to go on my first heli-skiing trip next Saturday, March 19th.  BUT, I tore the medial meniscus in my right knee this past Tuesday in Hangmans Hollow at Mammoth.   Was able to push my heli trip to this coming December and only lost HALF my money (which is no small expense).  Ah, but this too shall pass.

Everyone heal fast!!!  Season is not over, and the next one is around the corner!!!

Sorry to hear about your injury Tim...  :(  Heal fast and well!

Count me out. I just a car accident this morning. Nobody hurt except my wallet. Have fun. Maybe next year I'll get it together.

Glad you weren't hurt!  We'll try again next year.

So who is left at this point?  mdf, epic, SlowEddie and Snowbowler?  I think everybody else is injured or has bowed  out due to weather concerns.

post #47 of 55

I'm out of the gathering also.

Just grabbed a cheap flight to Reno. Getting the most out of my MCP! :)

(I do slightly better than crank, I got 4 days in the northeast)

You guys don't belong on a mtn, you belong in a hospital or perhaps an old folks home where somebody can take care of you. John - heal up my friend. Tim - so sorry about the injury and also the missed heli trip. So good to get to know you in Aspen. Kevin - that broken arm doesn't sound good. Heal up my friend. Gary

Well, qcanoe sounded on-the-fence in his last post. C'mon over, I'll bring some good wine (and in a major concession, not an over extracted new world fruit bomb).

Sunny and 57 here today and we may get more snow than Stowe on Sunday.

The proverbial fork has been stuck in our ski season.  Fat ladies are singing just like Dandy Don Meredith, "Turn out the lights the party's over..."

I've had this gathering in mind all year, and I'd still like to make it up. I have to see how kind next week's work is to me as to whether I can make the trip or not. Has the schedule changed?

Is it still:

Schedule:

  • Friday:  Stowe, 9AM, base of the Fourrunner Quad
  • Saturday:  Smuggler's Notch, 9AM, outside the lodge
  • Sunday:  Stowe, 9AM, base of the Fourrunner Quad
  • Monday:  Smuggler's Notch, 9AM, outside the lodge

Can someone post the schedule if it has changed?

Thanks!

That's the schedule...  I haven't been made aware of any planned deviations.

I've been saying I'll go if there's snow, and it turns out I have a four-day weekend.

I'd like to go, I think, if I can get out of there with bases intact. What's the likelihood this cold front will whisper "Blow snow!" to the management — if, that is, this "Nor'easter" delivers like every other "storm" this season?

There has been a little private message chatter but no decisions have been reached.

I'm making progress on making this trip happen. As of now, count me in.
