Stokli Stormrider 95 or 88

Thread Starter

Hi I am 5'11"  and 208 lbs, age 69 but in excellent shape and condition. I mostly ski East (Stratton and Hunter) with maybe a trip or two out west. I ski at expert level and can handle any terrain aggressively but rarely bump anymore. I am ready to park my Atomic Crimson Nomads and want to go for Stokli but I am torn between the Stormrider 95 and Stormrider 88. I have read about both and watched the vids. I have a chance to buy now but do not have a chance to demo first. I doubt I will go wrong with either ski but  does anyone have any suggestions on what my best choice would be?

Personally, I'd go for the 88, just because I think it's a more versatile width for frontside + a touch of off-piste and has a higher top end. OTOH, the 95 is probably better in trees, and doesn't give up much anywhere else, and will be more fun if you go out west and find some soft snow. So maybe the 95. Or maybe...:D

I would agree with what @Beyond stated. My reasoning behind selecting the 88 is that you will ski hard snow more in the east, and, the 88 fits those conditions better. I am not a fan of wider skis in the east and would not purchase a 95 for our conditions, but, that's me, and you may think in a different manner. If I lived in the west, my thinking would probably be the opposite. A 90ish waist ski is a generalist one ski quiver. There will be days where a narrower or wider ski would serve better, but, a Stockli is a damn good generalist.

I live in the midwest and get out west twice a year and I just bought the 88's on Saturday. If I lived in the Rockies I would have gone with the 95's.

I skied the 88 all last year on the same hills as you and never needed anymore. I would go 88's thinking you'll love them

I would recommend the 88 as well.  Just seems closest to what you are coming off of, and also a great all-around width.  Are you more leaning toward on-piste performance? If so, check out Holiday's review of the Scale, would be a good ski to consider alongside the SR88.  Not sure if it helps, but we are running a 15% off deal right now on all skis (website is down for a couple more days however, would have to call to place the order).  The SR88 is super versatile and so easy to ski in any condition. The 95 is similar, but different in length; you go up basically 1/2 size between the 2 skis.  And the SR95 would be my choice if I roamed off-piste most of the time: groomers 50% or more, check out the 88 or the Scale.
