Park City or Snowbird/Alta [arriving 12/9/15]

I am heading out to Park City Wednesday night for a few days. I'll be staying in Park City, but given that lack of snow so far this season, was wondering if it was worth making the drive over to Alta/Snowbird as opposed to staying in Park City with so few trails open. Thanks!

Not bad timing. Big change in the weather forecast for Thursday-Sunday. If you have the option of staying at snowbird/Alta, I would consider it. However, if you're committed to staying in PC, you might want to play by ear. I would also look at the amount of terrain open. The problem with Snowbird/Alta is that if Friday is a powder day, you will not be alone there. Might be a little less of a shit show at PC. And if it's 8 inches at PC vs 12 inches at Alta, might not be a bad idea to travel the road less traveled. Not to mention getting up the canyon if it's snowing.

Early on it's always better to head over to Little/Big Cottonwood Canyon over the PC resorts.  I stayed in PC proper in early December of 2012 and skied Alta every day but one....hit Deer Valley my last day.  As an aside Alta is one of my top 2 or 3 places to ski in the US so for me it was a no brainer to make the almost hour drive each way.

I believe DV has higher elevation than PC so you might want to try that as well with limited snow in that area.

Little Cottonwood, no question. It's raining now at the base at PC, turning to snow, but snowing at Alta and supposed to snow all night. We're prophesied to get buried this week. PC has been skiing "frozen granular" all week with just enough open to be dangerous. Pretty good for early season warm ups, but you want AltaBird right now. This weekend should be really, really good...always worth the drive. It's easy and Park City is still the town to stay in.

Snowbird on thursday was icy they were only running tram, gadzoom, gad 2, wilbere. They closed the tram before afternoon due to wind. Unless you can get a deal not worth full price
