Have you considered flipping skis???
One way to do this is to make a list of skies you are interested in. Then scout Ebay and craigslist for them and when you spot a good deal, pick them up. I usually try to buy with demo bindings, so it is easier to flip them on the back side.
The benefit is that you can ski them as long as you want, then unload them the same way you purchased them. If you really like them, buy yourself a new pair or move on to the next used demo. If you can turn them around within a month, you are usually in good shape. I rarely lose more than $50, which is the going day rate for good demos most places these days.
The drawback if that is next to impossible to find the current model year, so you are usually skiing on skis that are one season removed.
