Sugarloaf or Sunday River for wife?

Thread Starter

I'm visiting Maine the first week of January and want to get some skiing in -- maybe 3 days.  I will be with my wife.

We've been to Sunday River, so I'd like to visit Sugarloaf, but when I look at the trail map, it looks like a lot of expert terrain.  I'm fine with that, but my wife will not want to ski anything black that has not been groomed...and absolutely nothing in the double-diamond list, even though she is a pretty good skier.  Sunday River was a good place for her...lots of variety and grooming.  So I'm thinking of giving up on Sugarloaf and going back to SR.

Anyone got an opinion on this?  I really want to have a happy wife, so advice like "tell her to buck up" is not going to be helpful.  Is there enough intermediate terrain on Sugarloaf to keep her happy?

Yes. But if Saddleback opens that is more than worth considering as well. The intermediate terrain is not super-extensive but it is very nice, and the vibe is totally different from the Loaf. You can easily spend a day at Saddleback if you are staying at Sugarloaf.

Another thing to bear in mind is that much of the better expert terrain is unlikely to be open at either area by early January. Especially considering the slow start we're off to so far. The Loaf has the edge on extent of groomed terrain and snowmaking. Saddleback has the edge (IMHO) on natural snow retention and terrain "character".

Sugarloaf definitely has enough intermediate terrain when it's fully open. It's just a question of how much of it will be open by early January. If open terrain is the priority then Sunday river might be a safer choice as they have bigger snow making capability. Currently SR has 22 open vs 8 for sugarloaf. If you can afford to wait before making your decision and check the trail reports before going.

The only time I visited Sugarloaf my skill level was pretty much the same as your wife.

It was late in the season and almost the entire mountain was open, so we did get the full pick of the litter. Given the slow start to the year, open terrain may be the key decision making factor, as has already been noted.

There was plenty of terrain and variety for myself and my wife.

The biggest plus for intermediates in my mind of Sugarloaf vs Sunday River is the SuperQuad. A much longer lift, with more vert than anything at Sunday River.

Given the date of your trip another consideration is Sugarloaf is a colder mountain.
